i like you, amy

This is possibly the best book ever. Amy Sedaris, funny lady, has just published this amazing tribute to the art of entertaining, among other things, titled "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence". Like if Martha Stewart was hip, wore vintage and had a sick sense of humor.

Amy shows us what not to wear while cooking on an open flame (wizard sleeves).

Amy shares instructions to make her favorite crafts (paper aprons).

She suggests alternatives to store bought rolling pins (wine bottles or an old mop handle).

And she gives advice on gift giving. Just in time for the holiday. (My advice on the subject is to purchase this book)

friends of free people

Nylon's November issue features a section highlighting what's going on here in Philadelphia. As you may know, Philly is the city Free People calls home. So Nylon scouted some girls on the street to be part of their spread, and the three pictured all happen to be designers associated with FP. (Check Nylon's website soon. They have been posting all of their issues for free online!)

the art fits

Our display team has been doing some amazing art inside the fitting rooms of our boutiques. Each one is different and done using paints, markers, stencils and stickers. Check out the photos above of walls from our latest store location in Boston's Prudential Center.

the evolution of tape

Is it the scrapbooking craze or are designers just starting to hit on some really obvious ideas? (that scrapbooking bit is a joke) But seriously, why has no one thought of this before? I came across these decorative lace tapes a few months ago on coolhunting and then spotted the frame tape in the November issue of dwell magazine. I totally foresee using this one way too much in my apartment. You can get it on the website of Marti Guixe.

N.E.E.T.

N.E.E.T. is grass roots creativity, fashion with passion, along with amazing illustrations, crafts, and vintage. The coolest thing about this internet-only mag is you can get your creative self involved. Check out the faqs page at the end to learn how you can contribute your own handmade wares, illustrations, fashion photography or you own article.
mini free people

Once our designers design a style and colors, fabrics, and trims are chosen, a factory will send a proto for them to approve. The designer then approves or makes changes before it goes into production. Our factories usually send us proto samples in a real life women's size, so our knit designers were totally surprised when this mini sample arrived in the mail! The hoodie is so cute tiny it makes you think how adorable Free People baby clothes could be...

vintage halloween

Another cool feature happening with flickr groups... Check out this collection of vintage halloween images. Anyone can post images from the 1800's-1960's. Find amazing postcards, decorations, and costumes. Does anyone still bob for apples?
the belt watch

We just have to point out how amazing these watches are. Designed by Beth Frank in LA, she combines vintage embossed leather belts with antique watch faces to create a rough yet elegant piece of jewelry. In addition to the vintage elements, Beth adds a hand crafted buckle. The face of the watch is removable so you can switch it out with other bands, or combine a new face with the band. You have to keep track of the time, so why not on this beautiful watch instead of your silly cell phone?
wardrobe remix

You may have noticed the recent popularity of street fashion in blogs and magazines. (My personal favorite is Paris based facehunter .) Unless you live in one of the major cities, your chances of getting photographed are pretty slim. In the spirit of DIY, some girls have taken matters into their own hands and created wardrobe remix , a group on flickr. Check it out and get some new outfitting ideas from the crew involved, or start sharing your own personal styling talents.

felt rug

If you've ever been in one of our boutiques, you know how special our displays are. That is because we construct almost everything ourselves here in Philly. This photo is one of our display designers crafting a felt rug that is part of our window display in our new Boston store location at the Prudential Center.
polish puppies

While shooting our fall catalog in Poland, the girls visited a small village called Zalipie. This town was the inspiration for our fall "Cabinet of Curiosities" trend, with all of the handpainted wood work influencing both our clothing embellishment and store display design. In searching for locations for the shoot, they found this amazing painted dog house; the home of these sweet little puppies.
the free people blog...

We here at free people are a curious bunch. We share an interest in exploring all aspects of the artistic culture that surrounds us and in the people that create it. This blog is about sharing those discoveries and maybe even inspiring you to do some discovering of your own.
