behind the holiday catalog

Our holiday catalog was shot in Alaska amidst glaciers, reindeer, and sleigh dogs. The above photo was shot at the Matanuska glacier.

The girls had to park the van and hike about a mile to the Matanuska glacier because it was impossible to drive through the icy ground. They had to carry EVERYTHING with them that mile including all the outfits, photo equipment, and hair & makeup supplies.

Part of the shoot was done on a glacier called Punch Bowl. They were staying in a town about 1 hour southeast of Anchorage and had to take a helicopter up to the glacier location. Suprisingly, this was not the first helicopter ride for either of the girls from the Free People team. Our art director had been on one for a prior job, and her partner in crime had been on one at a car show at the age of four…

OOH! as an alaskan and a free people clothing lover I LOVE the fact that you shot the catalog in alaska! It makes me miss home!

The catalog looks amazing. I got it yesterday and couldn’t wait to pour through it. This is definitely your best catalog yet. Great job!

one time i got into a an argument with my roomate about the percentage of people that have been in a helicopter in their lives. she says at least 50%, probably higher, even though she had never been on one. i thought it was more around one in every four, or 25%. so we started asking people on the street if they had ever been in one, and i think everyone said they had been. now i see they apparently it is a requirement to get a job at free people. am i the only person on the planet that has not been on a helicopter?

sorry to ruin your theory, christopher, but i am a free people employee who has never been on a helicopter. i’ve been in planes, on boats, on trains, gondolas, cable cars, even a funicular. but never a helicopter. i think it has to do with the fact that in the movies people always seem to hunch over when they’re getting on, which leads me to believe that there is a slight chance of decapitation. so no thanks!

kate, i don’t even know what a funicular is, but as far as i am concerned its a fancy name for helicopter. either that, or its the real name for the gravitron at the carnival which they somehow conveted to a mode of transportation via inertia. though, i do see your point about getting my head chopped off by the spinning blade of death. i wouldn’t get on one of those planes from indiana jones where the german guy with no shirt on gets chopped up real good. i guess the moral of the story is duck when getting into a helicopter, don’t mess with indiana jones, and help save the environment by taking the gravitron to work.

well matanuska glacier is like 40 minutes from my house. so you have the approval of at least one teenage alaskan girl. i love you guys over at free people and all the crafty stuff you make, although most of the sweaters/slippers/boots/beaded jewelry that i wear are made by alaska natives around town and in shishmaref, kotzebue…

I also want to say how much I loved the catalog! I had just plopped down with my five sleddogs to enjoy some browsing- and how perfect!! Beautiful clothes and models, beautiful scenery, and dogsledding!

i had been wondering where the holiday catalog was shot. It’s so beautiful there! I agree it’s your best catalog yet. Thanks for putting up the video for an inside glimpse!
(p.s. i’ve never even been near a helicopter)
