radical lace & subversive knitting
Opening in New York this week (on January 25th) at the Museum of Arts & Design, "Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting" features the work of 27 artists from 7 countries. Check out below quote from the website...
"Radical reformers in the world of knitting and lace making have overthrown the status quo from the inside out. In the space of ten years, knitting has emerged from the “loving hands at home” hobbyist’s den into museums and galleries worldwide. Knitting clubs meet in cities from San Francisco to Stockholm, while interactive knitting “performances” have been held in as seemingly unlikely places as the London Underground."
Fiber arts, especially knitting, have become so much more visible in the last few years and have really developed into an important symbol for a certain kind of youth culture. From the connection with the past to DIY values, this is sure to be a fascinating show.

Just wanted to say that a few of my friends and I demand to know the secret of Free People model hair(especially with Winter Formals and things coming up).
These fiber arts are really intricate too. So nice!

we are soooo there. i definitely enjoy something as homey and grandmother-ish as crochet mixed with skulls and such. I predict apple pies laced with scotch and brandy next.

I went too! My favorite was the old car parts with the lace cut into them with a torch.

I enjoyed seeing the Couture show at the Costume Institute and comparing it to the work at the Knitting show. Both are intricate and precious...only one involved a lead teddy bear poisonous to the touch.
