The Valentine’s swap was a huge success and we’ve had lots of requests for another, so let’s do it! A huge theme in recent FP collections is travel. We’ve had store displays and product inspiration from across the world (the last two collections focusing on India and Africa), and summer is coming, so think about vacations! Get inspired by maps, travel guides, road trips, exotic countries, you get the idea.
So this time each participant will be matched with a partner. You will make something beautiful inspired by the idea of travel and they will make something for you in return. (Last time I matched everyone with one person to send to and a different to receive from, and it got a little crazy.) The sign up will be open for two weeks, so get your friends involved! Then you will have
about a month to make you goodies and send them out.
Click here to participate, and make sure you fill out all your info! Your email and mailing address are super important. Oh, and make a note if you’re totally against shipping internationally. Comment with any questions. Get to crafting!

cape town platforms

We are in love with these! What are we loving? Well, we’re super into platforms, and the ankle wrap is key. The African prints are really cheerful for summer, and there are 5 different prints to choose from. The stitching detail is really great, and they’re comfy. AND they were designed by our accessories designers so you won’t see them anywhere else. Check em out here…

- lola says:
I LOVE these shoes! I wish i had the money for them! oh well! one day…
- fpgirl says:
Hi Jessica,
I say try em out! You’ll never know if you can’t try them on. You can always return them, the process is pretty painless.

catalog stories

Got a comment from Paige asking about this little girl in our latest catalog. And Danie asked about the location. So here goes…
The catalog team shot the book in Puerto Rico. They travelled all along the north east coast, visiting San Juan, Ceiba, and El Yunque rainforest. They were driving through a beach town, saw the rooster mural on the side of a building and thought it would be a cool place to shoot. This little girl kept riding her bike by and watching the models. The FP girls asked her to be in the photo but the girl was super shy. Eventually she warmed up to them and decided to be in the photo if she could hold the model’s hand.
- Denise says:
I also would like to know the name of the model on the right! :)
She is so striking.
:) - Genie X says:
Incidentally, did her mother sign a model release?
Was she paid as a professional model would be for the shoot?
Gotta agree with Carla on this one. The image seems a little neo-colonial to me. (Shudder) - M says:
I agree..Who is she/where is she from? She is absolutely gorgeous..(i have my money on persian ;) )

We’re looking for Free People girls to work in our stores! Check out our store locations to see if there’s one near you. Apply here!
- Free emo sex says:
I dont usually comment on blogs but i have to tell you awesome job
- Lori says:
I still like the FP clothing, but I used to be OBSESSED. Until I got all ready for an FP interview in NYC only to be told I was too young for a job. I even emailed to ask if it was okay to be younger than 18, and the answer I was emailed was yes. Please make this aware to your other fans before you dissapoint them too.
- kathy says:
i know it’s “far away” but you should defintiely consider opening a store in alaska. no, there aren’t igloos up here or polar bears or anything silly like that. anchorage is like any other city in the states.
i know a lot of people who love free people, and i love free people too. i’m sure it’d be my favorite to shop at!

journey is the destination

I promised to share a couple of books that were really inspiring to the creative team while working on April’s catalog. The first is called “Zara’s Tales” , a memoir about Peter Beard’s adventures in Africa and dedicated to his daughter, Zara. Beard’s beautiful photography and drawings are scattered throughout.
The second is called “The Jouney is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon“. Dan was an accomplished photo journalist by the age of 22 and was also a fantastic artist, combining collage techniques with his amazing photographs. This book was compiled from several scrap books he kept and his family assembled after his tragic death at 22, when Dan Eldon was working in extremely dangerous conditions in Mogadishu. A truly inspiring man of passion and talent. I recommend you check out this website “An Electronic Revolution” inspired by his life and work.
- Ijlal says:
Dan Eldon truly an inspiration to us all
- Eliz says:
Dan Eldon is my absolute hero.
He went to the same summer camp as I did when I was little! All the way in Iowa.
Free People is also my aboslute hero and his book has inspired me to make alot of lovely things too! - fpgirl says:
Like many things that come through the grapevine, this rumor is unfortunately false. There are no matching undies for the striped mini slip. But the ruffle panty matches the black geo and pink batik slip!

april in africa

Our newest catalog should be on its way! Continuing with our theme of travel, the latest is inspired by Africa.
Our graphic designer took the oppurtunity to really run with the theme and did a ridiculous amount of artwork to collage into the catalog. Above photos show the pile of original works of painting and markmaking.
She also hand cut linoleum blocks to get the stamping technique seen in some of the titles. This book proved to be a truly hands on project. Stay tuned for more Africa “behind the scenes” and check out the catalog here…
- Leha says:
Your graphic designer is my hero! Who is she? I have always wanted to know. I love all the photos that turn into drawings, the collaging and layering, the handmade touches, the old book stuff (esp. that kestrel)–and the colors! Inspired by Africa, or a country within it, or one piece of fabric, a flower, or whatever it is, one thing is for sure and that is that she is INSPIRED! Every catalog! And the website…
Thanks,
Leha - kathy says:
i loved this catalog. i love all the colors and just everything about it. it’s so creative.
- fpgirl says:
hey Kristy!
About the block printing… The HELP & INFO came out just fine thanks to the aid of computers! She just flipped the image on the computer. That’s why she’s the graphic designer and not the FP linoleum cutter. haha…

Yay! I just signed up for my first ever swap!! Think I’ve got some funky ideas too and I hope this will finally give me a good excuse to learn some new skills! :D
hehe can’t wait!
Great! I just finished up my first swap, can’t wait to start on the next!
