model casting
We get a million girls asking how we cast our models. Well here it is, from our team that holds the castings...
about every 2 or 3 months, we at free people host a model casting to check out new faces for our upcoming web and catalog shoots. we start by contacting modeling agencies - usually based in new york - and ask them to send girls to our showroom.
then, for anywhere from 4 to 6 hours on a given day, we'll sit and meet with whoever visits.
the girls (and once in a while, guys) bring their comp cards for us to view...these cards usually show 4 or 5 photos, along with the models' measurements, contact info for the agency who represents them, etc.
and then we'll flip through their portfolios...
it gives us a chance to see their versatility, how they've been styled in the past, what magazines they've appeared in...
and then we'll snap a few pix of our own, which we usually take back to philadelphia and look at with our bosses before deciding who we want to hire!
we get a lot of emails from folks who want to model for us...
we love your enthusiasm to work with free people! but, please know that we use only models from those agencies who we've contacted.
if you're interested in modeling, feel free to contact a local agency; or, look some up in the bigger cities - new york, los angeles, miami - and they can help you get started!

so you have to be from an agency? any one that walks in during that 4-6 hour slot isn't really considered? or are they from agencies too?
thanks =)

Hi Sophia! Yes, we only use models through agencies. The casting is scheduled and we invite models to come in that we are interested in working with.
I love LBI! If you're interested in modeling, definitely try to get started with a professional agency. Thanks for commenting! Hope that helped...

Well first off I love your clothing...sooo cute!
I was wondering if you ever call other agencies from smaller areas, for example St. Louis, Missouri, where I live.
oh and another question, what is your preference on age when it comes to the models?

I adore free people and love the whole sense of aesthetic that your line brings out in every representation of it! I was wondering if there was any kind of way to get involved in the line, such as an internship. I am interested in anything you have :)

Hello, I have been researching Free People and Anthro stores for some time now because I admire the designs and sense of style so much. I will be graduating from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a degree in Fashion Design soon, and I am curious if there is any way to get involved with your companies design team by means of internship. Thanks for reading and responding. :D

Hi Natalee,
You can always apply for an internship on our website. If there is no internship listed, there is a place to send your resume if you're not applying for a listed job. This is the link.
Thanks! good luck!

I'm 5'2 but am told for catalogue modeling it you don't have to be tall. I look like the type of model you would cast and have been told so also. Will you be having any castings in Chicago? Would you accept a petite model?
