book club selection #2

for the next book club selection we have decided to read stephen chbosky’s the perks of being a wallflower.  we haven’t had the chance to read the book yet, and hope that if you have, you will read it again with us and perhaps you will take away something new or add to our experience.  it’s a quick read so this book club session will be short – we will take two weeks to read the book and will post things that the book inspires along the way.

and of course, if you have a suggestion for future book club selections, please let us know.

cauliflower buttermilk soup

it may seem a little odd, with all this talk of spring and warmer weather, to post a soup recipe. but this cauliflower buttermilk soup sounds so heart warmingly good i couldn’t resist…great for a chilly evening.

cauliflower buttermilk soup
1 large cauliflower, broken into florets
2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves of garlic, chopped
1 1/2 t salt
4 c water or stock
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 c parmesan cheese
large pinch of dried dill weed
1 tablespoon of dijon mustard
salt & pepper

place the cauliflower, potatoes, onion and garlic into a large pot. add in water or vegetable stock and bring to a boil. lower heat and simmer (no lid needed) until vegetables are quite tender (about 30 minutes). puree with a hand blender or transfer to a blender and puree until smooth.

add in the buttermilk, parmesan, dill and mustard and stir until combined. season with salt and pepper if necessary. serve in deep bowls. this should make about 4 large servings.

alexandra in the forest

i’m in awe over this photography by alexandra valenti.  sunsoaked and infused with bohemian spirit, her images evoke summer and hikes in the woods, cooling off in hidden springs, and backyard barbecues with friends.  i want to step inside these photos and be a part of them.

check out her website here.

valley green

on the outskirts of philadelphia, past manayunk and mount airy, you’ll find the wissahickon valley of fairmount park and a hidden wonderland known as valley green. the sound of traffic and horns are replaced by birds and trickling water and its hard to believe you’re still technically in the city. this scenic little valley is one of my favorite spots to go for a day of hiking, relaxing, and escaping when i’m feeling a little drained by the hustle and bustle of living downtown. sometimes you just need to get back in touch with nature.
