down in new orleans

yes, some of you are probably still recovering from the madness of coachella but this weekend another huge music festival begins  – the new orleans jazz festival!  this isn’t your typical festival though — it spans 9 days and is all about celebrating the incredibly rich musical heritage and culture of new orleans. there are some pretty impressive musicians playing this year- including dr. john, the black crowes, the funky meters, simon & garfunkel, my morning jacket, the allman brothers, widespread panic, aretha franklin, pearl jam, jeff beck, van morrison, b.b. king and richie havens…just to name a few :) in addition, there will be arts and crafts galore, and all of this is on top of the mysterious, voodoo tinged atmosphere that already exists in one of the most fascinating cities of the united states.

if you’re heading to new orleans for all or part of the festivities, there are a couple of places you’ve got to check out! for one, the entire french quarter – the architecture is stunning and the balconies are overflowing with plants, with the occasional string of beads left over from mardi gras.  stop by marie laveau’s house of voodoo to check out all the good luck charms, candles and alters and soak in the voodoo atmosphere – just don’t touch the alters or attempt to take a picture because they will yell at you! for breakfast cafe du monde is a necessity, but be warned – you will have to wait a while to be seated. they have amazing coffee and little donut-like pastries called beignets that are to die for!

if any of you are headed to jazz fest let me know how it is!
