riding on the marrakesh express…

in 1966 graham nash took a train from casablanca to marrakesh, and the experience moved him to write about the sights, sounds and feelings in what became the song named after the train, “marrakesh express.” the line that stands out to me is “had to get away to see what we could find,” a sentiment shared by many artists and musicians who traveled to morocco in the sixties. read the lyrics and listen to the song below, and imaging you’re traveling trough deserts and palm groves with mountains on the horizon and the spirit of discovery in your soul…

looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes,
traveling the train through clear moroccan skies
ducks and pigs and chickens call,
animal carpet wall to wall
american ladies five-foot tall in blue.
sweeping cobwebs from the edges of my mind,
had to get away to see what we could find.
hope the days that lie ahead
bring us back to where they’ve led
listen not to what’s been said to you.

wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express.
wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express,
they’re taking me to marrakesh.
all aboard the train.
all aboard the train.

i’ve been saving all my money just to take you there.
i smell the garden in your hair.
take the train from casablanca going south,
blowing smoke rings from the corners of my mouth.
colored cottons hang in the air,
charming cobras in the square.
striped djellebas we can wear at home.
well, let me hear ya now.

wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express.
wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express,
they’re taking me to marrakesh.
wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express.
wouldn’t you know we’re riding on the marrakesh express,
they’re taking me to marrakesh.
all on board the train,
all on board the train,
all on board!

Why are you guys going to casablanca and fez!? Go to Essaouira and M’hamid! Essaouira is this absolutely beautiful nautical city where all the buildings are white and the windows are blue. absolutely beautiful and relaxed. In Marrakesh they attack you in 10 different languages to buy their stuff, in Essaouira it’s all at your own pace, the shops are more hippie based, and the hotels/riads are amazingly beautiful. About 30 minutes from Essaouira is Sidi Kaouki, a secret surfer area with the best atmosphere ever. We were welcomed with a lovely tangine and bob marley tunes. you guys gotta check it out. theres more to morocco than what you are getting!

here are some of my fav pics from essaouira and sidi kaouki, if the fp team is still in morocco go!
