highland park style sesh!
a couple of weeks ago our highland park, illinois store had an event celebrating their first birthday, and they raffled off a personal styling session at their store. the winner was one of their favorite customers, hannah, who came in for an hour of collaborative styling with the girls of highland park. check out some of the great outfits they put together!

documerica
for the documerica project, the EPA hired freelance photographers to take pictures of subjects relating to environmental problems, EPA activities, and everyday life in america in the 1970s. the resulting photographs are fascinating to look through, and many of them are quite beautiful. i love the old, grainy quality of the photos…they make me long for a simpler time. here are some of my favorites…

Shindig
Lately I’ve been obsessing over Indiana Jones style hats. I recently saw Risko from src783
Looking might fine in one and it just made me WANT one even more. I’m thinking here a perfect shindig outfit or
a look I would wear late afternoon drinking in a local dive bar. The hat, an oversized denim wrangler shirt with bike shorts underneath of course and
these lovely little clogs.
All I need now is for Friday to hurry up and get here!!!!!!
a free people volkswagon!
spotted in milan – amazing!

wednes-diy
i’ve never really been one for clothing with the american flag on it…but i would totally love to do this with my shorts and if they came out looking half as good as valerie’s from bleach black i would rock them all the time!
what you need:
a pair of denim shorts
paint pens- she recommends two white and two red
x-acto knife, pencil and ruler
one piece of hard posterboard for stencil (she used the hangtag from the shorts)
and here are her instructions:
begin by practicing with your white paint pen, on the inside of your shorts, so you can get used to how the pen works. once you are ready, prepare your stencil for your shorts. my star is 1.25″ at the widest point. cut out star with x-acto knife, and place on shorts. use stencil to draw the outline of your shorts. remove stencil, and fill in star with paint pen. place next star approx 2″ away from next star. if you end at a seam, draw a small part of the next star, to continue the pattern repeat. once you are ready with your stripes, begin on the far left seam, using the seam as a ruler. my red stripes are 1/2″ wide, and approx 3/4″ apart. continue stripes up to waistband, and on coin pocket, but not on waistband.
sweet! you’re set for the 4th of july, too.
best wishes…
…to our awesome office coordinator, who left us this week. fortunately, she’s just moving to a different department here at urban so we’ll still get to see her. some pics from her going away breakfast…
we’ll miss you!!!
just another day at the office…
two sisters, one car and a camera
a couple of weeks ago, a reader named kayla contacted us to let us know that we inspired her and her sister to take a cross country road trip that they documented on her tumblr. her photos were so amazing i couldn’t wait to share- and they also fit perfectly with our current americana theme.
their photos give you a wonderful taste of what it’s like to drive across the united states – from deserts and teepees to skyscrapers and subway cars. looking at their pictures is making me nostalgic for my own road trip. i want to do it again.
the photos were taken with a fujifilm instax instant camera, in case you were wondering :)
check out her tumblr here, and see more of her beautiful photos here.
thank you for sharing kayla!
are you going to glasto?
one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated music festivals in the world starts tomorrow – glastonbury! located on worthy farm in pilton, glastonbury has been going on since 1970 – the day after jimi Hendrix died, to be exact. it has come a long way since its first year, when attendance was only 1500 and the cost of entry was one pound (which included free milk from the farm). now there are too many artists playing to even list, and tickets are extremely hard to come by – but i can see why. it is definitely on my list of festivals that i must attend at some point in my life.
it reminds me of bonnaroo but on a much bigger scale – a farm that transforms into its own bohemian world of music, dancing, laughter and lights. and maybe some mud…
love that last photo…those girls have the right idea!
some of the many acts playing at this year’s glastonbury: gorillaz, muse, stevie wonder, flaming lips, phoenix, the national, lcd soundsystem, mgmt, grizzly bear, black keys, mumford & sons, the xx, julian casablancas, broken social scene, mos def, george clinton with parliament, toots & the maytals, loudon wainwright III, broken bells, local natives, beach house…and many, many more. sigh.
are you going? who are you excited to see? be our eyes and ears… and feel free to send photos to blog@freepeople.com :)
top two images from the glastonbury scrapbook.
phish phans
one of our fp girls (who also went to bonnaroo with us) is currently on vacation following phish around to some of their east coast shows – she sent along some photos for the blog and i’m so jealous. wish i was there…
the ends in sequins dress is a summer concert and festival favorite!
sweet ride!
i know its not the easiest to see, but the girl on the left’s hat is rad – check out the pattern on the underside of the brim.
phish will be in camden (just over the bridge from philly) this thursday and friday and a couple of our fp girls are going – will YOU be there??
