what better way to spend our last morning in building 15 than with a birthday party, cake and mimosas?
happy friday!
what better way to spend our last morning in building 15 than with a birthday party, cake and mimosas?
happy friday!
moving day! we have to shut down our computers by 10am so i won’t be able to post for a little while, but i’ll be posting photos from the xpn festival this weekend so stay tuned!
one of my friends snapped this on the way to work this morning…how cute :)
i wouldn’t mind having someone carry me around like that today!
this is the lovely georgia of the blog dora’s fur – doesn’t she look adorable? our creative design assistant snapped this photo of her yesterday. apparently the shorts used to be a skirt that she altered herself! they are super cute and i love the knotted shirt look- so effortless and cool for summer.
our stylists’ picks for this week are the taverniti 5 pocket destroy cargo and the fritz bows & arrows clog!
“these pants are so versatile – you can dress them up or down. wear them with a graphic tee and a scarf for a cute casual look, or dress them up with the black seamless tupelo honey top, the fritz bows & arrows clog (our other pick for this week) and a dressy bag. it’s great to see cargo pants in a skinnier fit so they can be sexy! plus military is still going to be a huge trend this fall.”
casual: we the free graphic wings tee; deck shoe.
dressy: seamless tupelo honey top; doub’s woven crossbody; fritz bows & arrows clog.
“these clogs are SO comfortable! they look amazing with the sock trend that’s going on right now – they look really cute with over the knee or slouchy socks. wear them now with cutoff shorts and a tank, and carry them into the fall with tights and a bodycon dress!”
summer/casual: we the free lacey burnout tunic; cutoff skinny slouch; ruffle slouch sock.
fall/dressy: solid poison ivy tunic; opaque tights; graham & spencer open stitch sweater.
this friday we will say goodbye to building 15, our home here at the navy yard, and moving into a new, larger building. but building 15 will always hold a special place in our hearts… from the moment i first walked through the doors, i felt at home here.
blue bins everywhere – they’re for us to pack our stuff in.
this wall has never looked so naked :)
ditto for my workspace…it looks so sad.
fritz does not appreciate all this moving and shaking!
so long, b15…we’ll see you around :)
our concept intern, anastasiya, put together this post on a trend she loves right now – and i love it too :)
I have always had a special spot for grunge, but lately that tenderness has grown into a full-fledged love for the style that was popularized in the nineties before staging its comeback in the twenty-first century. The utility and the comfort that accompanies the look is an instant winner, but the most fun aspect of grunge for me is the way that it makes me feel. I love that I can pull on a confused blend of loose thermal, torn jeans, floor-length skirt, give or take flannel, and go bare-faced out into the world and feel totally at ease. All insecurities dissolve, receding further into some forgotten trapdoor in the back of my mind each time that my hands re-inhabit the warm asylum of my too-long sleeves. In grunge there is no pretension—nothing to prove. It feels right.
Free People’s incorporation of grunge is divine. I love the idea of injecting pretty, feminine lace into a look that is messy, low maintenance, and somewhat boyish by nature. It feels very fresh.

i saw this on black eiffel and i am completely in awe. a company called front created this “three dimensional wallpaper” at the swedish venue tensta konsthall using silk and plastic flowers. i want to do this in my apartment so badly! it’s so colorful and i’ve never seen anything like it.
i think it looks really cool how they’re just taped right onto the wall.
another really neat idea- hanging flowers in bottles!
i think this would look really amazing using different sized and shaped vintage bottles and dried flowers, like these:
our producer took the above photo at dunton hot springs in colorado, when they were shooting our july catalog. they also had bottles hanging on the walls of this cabin, which i thought was really cool too although i’m not sure how they’re attached to the wall…
our july catalog and its stunning location have really got me longing for a rugged hiking and camping vacation. all I want to do is take off on a weekend with nothing but a rucksack on my back and explore the great outdoors. i am a summer person but i am already dreaming about fall because i think that would be the perfect time of year to do this… hearing the crunch of the leaves beneath my feet, brisk morning air that still warms up to the sun, moonlit dips in a lake and drying off by a fire with a big cozy blanket wrapped around me…
here’s what i would bring:
1. vintage patched travels backpack; 2. fp super skinny cord; 3. we the free rugged trench coat; 4. portland lace up boot & cableknit tall sock; 5. motorcuff long sleeve scoop thermal; 6. eternal sunshine shirt; 7. southwest poncho.
i would really love to hike the appalachian trail –maybe not the entire length (from maine to georgia or vice versa) but at least part of it. i had the opportunity to do this once in high school and i always kindof regretted not taking it.

what is your favorite spot to go hiking? give me some ideas!!
this is such a cool idea! “life in a day” is a cinematic experiment produced by ridley scott and directed by kevin macdonald, together with the youtube community. the goal is to capture a snapshot, through many different eyes, of what life is like on earth during one 24 hour period. how are they going to do this?
they are asking YOU – anybody and everybody – to chronicle their life on one day, july 24 2010. this could be your daily routine, your job, what you’re afraid of, what you love, a pretty sunset, ANYTHING. you can then upload your video on the project’s website, and the most compelling and distinctive videos will be edited into the final feature film. the film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011 – and if your video is used, you’ll be credited as a co-director and have a shot at being one of 20 people who gets to go to sundance to celebrate with kevin macdonald.
ummm…..wow? i’m curious, what would your film be about?
the following post is by our creative team’s intern, mallie!
A group of French students from my school just got back from Senegal, Africa, and while looking through their pictures I was reminded so much of Free People. The neon fabrics in contrast with the neutral tones of the environment create an awesome mixture of colors – similar to the prints and designs I often see on our clothing. And I wouldn’t mind snagging one of those bags or pieces of jewelry either ;-)
i’m so jealous! looks amazing…
oh and by the way, mallie designed our new “intern-al affairs” header! cute, right??
