toroymoi tunesday

maybe when chaz bundick (a.k.a. toro y moi) named his album “underneath the pine” he was envisioning that it would be the perfect locale to listen to his latest album.  the juxtaposition of the light of the sun and darkness of the shade and surrounding fresh air seems appropriate for this album, which is much more mellow and melodic than his last. i can imagine it as the background music for a day spent in the park, sprawled on blankets reading books and watching birds fly overhead, whereas the last was a little more get up and dance around in the park. listen to a few of the new songs below (as well as an older one that i love – “leave everywhere”) and let me know what you think! unfortunately i wasn’t able to get some of the better ones for the playlist :(

oh and another cool thing- bundick designed tote bags that he is selling on etsy and if you purchase one you also get a card with the free download info for the new album. cool idea!

photo1 guest blog post: snapshots of a day in LA

We arrived in LA and up first it’s time for some prop shopping!

photo2 guest blog post: snapshots of a day in LA

The air was fresh and the vibe was calm after the bustle of the east coast. “California Dreamin” played over and over in our heads like it was the soundtrack of our time there.

We picked up some heart shaped balloons for our shoot, but they never made the catalog.

Production made a sweet strawberry cake for Candy and Meadow’s section of the catalog.

The first day of shooting is always exciting. We got to see Jason Lee Parry in the element as photographer.

We shot at one of the most beautiful beach houses in Malibu – the home of actress Nan Martin, where her husband resides today.

Our surroundings were like staring into an old postcard.

We shot our final hours of the day into the sunset sky.

Looking out into the California sunset made me realize my love for this place was bigger than I could have imagined. Maybe it was the sound of the ocean, maybe it was the laughter in the air, maybe it was the pink sky, but in the moment I realized I could die here.

The view from our van on our way back to the hotel after shooting day one!

just kids: part four

February 21st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

i finished just kids somewhere over the midwest, during my flight to san francisco. if you’re familiar with the story or with robert mapplethorpe, you know that it is not the happiest of endings, but instead of leaving me with teary eyes and an empty pit in my stomach, i felt hopeful and inspired.

to me this book was not about what patti and robert went through or the careers they found success in, it was about their relationship. two people who could only be described as soulmates, who found each other and through each other, found what they were meant to do with their lives. and while their paths split and they went in different directions, they were still joined at the heart.

it reminded me very much of the quote I posted a few weeks ago:
“a true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. but to live with a soul mate forever? nah. too painful. soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave. a soul mate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, and make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life.”

This photo (boy and girl with their heads down, incase the html doesn’t work) is by Megan Leonard. There is no credit given on the tumblr link, so I shall do it here. Also it’s originally in color. Thank you.

Thank you so much for recommending this book. I just finished it last night and was blown away by the sincerity and emotion that Patti Smith evoked. I really couldn’t find the strength to hold back the tears when it came towards the end. I look forward to your next book of the month recommendation! :]

vintage tees are here!

February 21st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

if there was one article of clothing i was going to collect, it would be vintage tshirts. i love them and can never get enough…  each one is a little piece of history.  the ones i own each have a story behind them that makes them incredibly special… a bar in somer’s point NJ where my parents used to hang out, a tom petty shirt from his “last dance with mary jane” tour that a boyfriend gave to me and is full of holes , a pink floyd tee i found in brooklyn, and my favorite- and perhaps the most random – a tshirt my uncle picked up in wyoming years ago that ended up in my mom’s possession, and now mine.

so when i found out we’d be selling vintage t-shirts as part of our vintage loves collection, you can imagine how excited i was. our vintage buyer did an amazing job hand picking these rare and perfectly broken in tshirts… i’ll admit it, i bought two the moment they went on sale… check them all out here!

you should also check out our homepage right now, it’s pretty neat :)
