this is a pretty amazing concept, I love the fact that you are working with luxury materials and vendors. Its nice to see more conceptual crochet and knitwear instead of the typical vintage inspired pieces..definitely stepped it up a notch in my book :)

  • Catarino says:

Is that beautiful long floral kimono one of the girls is wearing (at about the 58 second mark) something that’s coming soon??? Is it an August goodie by chance???

Teriyaki Cod with Broccoli Rabe and Brown Rice

July 24th, 2011 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

This week’s recipe is more of an entire meal, and, I’m not going to lie, it’s a bit more difficult than the recipes I usually post. This is one to pull out when you have a good amount of time to cook, and you want to impress a group of friends (or whoever) with an entire delicious meal.

The coolest part of this Asian-inspired meal is that you’ll be able to tell everyone you made your own teriyaki sauce. Who does that, right? It’s easier than you’d think. It’s all about letting it boil down to the right consistency which can take a while. The broccoli rabe is the perfect light accompaniment to go along with the flavorful fish. Top the plate off with simple brown rice, to fill your guests up.

Fish Ingredients:

1.5lbs of Cod

1tsp Ginger

¾ Cup Orange Juice

¼ Cup Mirin

½ Cup Soy Sauce

1 Garlic

1 Scallion stem

Broccoli Rabe Ingredients:

15 Stems of full, leafy broccoli Rabe

1tbsp Grapeseed Oil

2 Garlic Cloves cut into quarters

1 Cup Water

Brown Rice Ingredients:

1 Cup Brown Rice

2.5 Cups Water

3 Scallion Stems

1tbsp Butter or oil

Picnik collage9 Teriyaki Cod with Broccoli Rabe and Brown Rice

Instructions:

  1. Place orange juice, mirin, soy sauce, and ginger into a large sauce pan at high heat. Once it starts to boil, lower the heat and let simmer until it reaches a thicker consistency. Approx 30-40min.
  2. When teriyaki sauce is half way done, place butter and scallions in a small pot to sauté for about 2 minutes. Add brown rice & water. Cover pot until water has evaporated and rice is cooked. Turn off flame, and let sit, coved, until rest of meal is ready.
  3. Preheat oven to 400F
  4. Cook the cod in the sauce pan with the teriyaki sauce for about 4 minutes. Then place it in a flat, oven-safe pan. Pour left-over teriyaki sauce over the fish & add chopped scallions. Cook in the oven for another 10 minutes.
  5. Using the same sauce pan, add grapeseed oil and garlic for broccoli rabe. Once garlic is sautéed, add broccoli rabe and water to cook for about 5 minutes. Once it is fully wilted, like cooked spinach almost, it will be done. You may have to pour out excess water.

Lital Gold

Lital Gold emailed in to the blog a couple of weeks ago asking us to check out her artwork. I fell in love the minute I clicked the link, and just knew we had to do a post on her. She is mainly a textile designer for clothing and home goods, but she also does phenomenal ink, pen, and water color portraits full of imagination. I began researching her a bit, and was intrigued to find out that she is from Israel. I grew up around a lot of Israelis and find them to be really interesting people. This sparked me to want to know more about who she is, so I asked if she would be down to answer some questions for the blog. She said yes! So enjoy an interview and some of my favorite pieces from this captivating young woman. Once you’re done, check out her blog – she does really cool things with displaying her art and giving peeks into what she’s working on.

Do you have a usual process/routine for working on your pieces?

I usually have a vision of what I want to make. I start from an image that makes me smile and interests me, and just let it be whatever it wants. Sometimes I have something on my mind but the abstraction process takes me to a different place, which is also great because I get to see more than one option of what it could be.

How did growing up in Israel influence you?

Growing up in Israel is not always simple, but I wouldn’t replace it. Israel is a small, colorful country, with beautiful nature and mixed cultures, many kinds of ethnic groups and religions.  I think this “mix” and ethnic world influence me the most.

Where is your favorite city/place and why?

My favorite place (so far) is “Pushkar”, a small village in Rajasthan, India. I’ve visited there 4 times and I love everything about this place!! I really get inspired by the gypsy culture the colors and silence of the desert. The local people are lovely and the food…oh the food.

What inspires you most?

Fashion, colors, street art and music.

How would you describe your own personal clothing style?

All printed!

If you were another animal which would you be?

A hedgehog and only because it’s cute!

What is the best thing to eat for breakfast?

CRUNCH cereal!

Who are your favorite all-time artists?

Tim Burton oh yeah!

If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would it be?

That’s a really tough question…If dead it would be Gustav Klimt or Alexander McQueen. You choose.

8 Lital Gold

What is your song of the week?

I’m the Walrus – The Beatles kukukuchu

If you could travel anywhere in space and time, where would you go?

I would definitely go to the moon.

When you’re not making art, you’re…?

Doing nothing?!

What is your dream for your artwork? What does success look like for you?

Every time I see my art works take shape – if it’s on a dress, a carpet or a wall paper it makes me happy, it’s like magic to me. For me, success is when my design is communicative enough to get into people’s houses or cover their body. That’s what makes my work relevant.

What do you think is unique about your style of art?

Textile is unique. It has an inner bit, it’s repetitive and traditional, a never-ending story. I love it and try to preserve it in my works by giving it a new aesthetic and interpretation. I bring myself and my own language and touch.  All of my art works are handmade, and each work tells a different story. That is what makes them communicative.

What does free mean to you?

To feel no fear at all

Do you ever have a day where you don’t spend any money? For myself, it’s pretty rare, but when it does happen, I feel so fulfilled. Without money you have to think more. You have to cook for yourself, make your own coffee, and enjoy the people around you.

It’s not realistic to do every day, but for today, don’t spend a cent. You’ll notice those areas in life where you are spending frivolously, and you can learn from it to make some small changes in your daily habits. Perhaps you start bringing your lunch to work 3 days a week? Or, you ride your bike instead of taking the subway on weekends? In the long run, those few dollars saved will help you buy that big ticket item you’ve been dreaming about…wouldn’t you rather have that than a store-bought hoagie?

I really enjoy this blog, it’s a lot of fun and very inspiring. However, it’s the only part of Free People that I associate with anymore. I’ve always justified FP’s prices one way or another. Better quality, more detail, hand crafted, unique, but recently the prices have become extreme. I can’t even afford a t-shirt anymore. :(

  • Gwen says:

How interesting are our differing lifestyles. I don’t spend money more than 1–2 days per week, and that includes for gasoline!

  • Karen Jones says:

I think the price of the Fp items are justifiable.. It’s not just some scraggly materials patched together to make a “boho” look but the designers take time and dedicate hard work into creating these pieces. Granted, I do think that the tees and tanks are expensive for their range. But you do get it back in terms of quality and that’s what I most appreciate about Free People. I would rather spend $300 on a free people dress that is probably one of a kind than something from the rack of Bloomingdale’s that probably cost $200 more.

Weekend Getaway: Find a Swimming Hole

July 22nd, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

There are a lot of things I love about Austin, but near the top of the list are the swimming holes. When we were down there for our July catalog release party, it was sweltering – over 100 degrees. So the Saturday after our party, with a day off to explore, we went straight to Barton Springs.

Weekend Getaway: Find a Swimming Hole

Barton springs consists of four natural water springs, around one of which is a man-made pool that is one of the most popular places to hang out in Austin. The water is COLD – and the best way to deal with that is to gather your courage and dive in. When you do, the rush you experience is refreshing and rejuvenating. Some Austinites believe that not only is it good for your mental being, it’s also good for your health. I can definitely see how that may be true.

On the near side of the barrier in the pool above is a smaller pool where you can take your pup swimming! Barton springs costs just $3 for a full day, and is open until 11pm (night swimming!)

We didn’t have time to visit this next one, but if I ever find myself back in austin (and I hope I do) this is on my list of things I MUST do.

hamilton Weekend Getaway: Find a Swimming Hole

Yes, this is in Texas. Hamilton pool, located 30 miles outside of downtown Austin, is a natural pool that was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed from erosion thousands of years ago. The result is secluded pool surrounded by cliffs and huge slabs of limestone, into which a waterfall runs. Getting to the pool requires a steep quarter-mile downhill hike – but it’s more than worth it.

After seeing the amazing swimming holes that Austin has to offer, I thought, surely there are swimming holes near Philadelphia? Indeed there are, and while it might not be on the same level as the ones above, Devil’s Pool is a swimming hole right here in Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Creek.

Chances are, where you live you have a swimming hole nearby as well – and with the crazy heat coming this weekend, this might be a necessary thing to do!

Check out swimmingholes.org, where you can view maps of all the swimming hole locations near you! The site was started by a man from Philadelphia named Tom, who runs the site purely as a hobby with the help of his friend Dave.  Why? “Tom and Dave like to explore, find and enjoy these hidden pools in natural settings they find a natural swimming hole in a beautiful setting to be very nurturing and soothing to the body and soul.”

Agreed.

  • Barton Springs is, indeed, the most healing water I’ve ever known. I grew up just a few blocks from there and every time I return to that icy water, all is right in the world once more.

  • I put this to use this weekend and found a swimming hole off the website and dove in yesterday. It was FUN! I got bit by something on my bellybutton, but still fun :)

  • Katie says:

I love Devil’s Pool! Me and my friends go there all the time. It’s perfect for these hot summer days!
