One of my favorite festivals is taking place this weekend at Wiggins Park in Camden NJ: the XPoNential music festival! The festival is put on every year by the University of Pennsylvania’s public radio station, WXPN. But before you go thinking… “I doubt a college radio station has a good music festival,” check out the lineup, which includes Emmylou Harris, Keb’Mo, Citizen Cope, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Ben Folds, Booker T., North Mississippi Allstars, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Ra Ra Riot, Sun Airway and lots more.
I may be biased as a former UPenn student but XPN is one of the best radio stations out there – with programs like Live at the World Café they have earned a solid reputation in the music industry and have helped several artists break into the big time by playing their music before anyone else. Artists have tremendous respect for what they do, which is how they are able to consistently draw such big names.
In addition to being a three-day festival in the gorgeous scenery of Wiggins Park, which looks out over the Delaware river at the Philadelphia skyline, the festival also has amazing vendors each year who sell unique handmade goods.
I will be there all weekend taking photos and covering the action from this year’s special social media tent, taking photos at the shows and chatting with artists. Stay tuned!
For now here’s a playlist of some of the artists who will be playing at the festival… I’m pretty excited for Booker T., North Mississippi Allstars, Ra Ra Riot, Givers and Gary Clark Jr. – if you haven’t heard of him check him out, he’s awesome.
