An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

September 27th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

While at the POPPED! Music Festival on Saturday I had the opportunity to sit down with the executive producer who organized the fest, Alexis Rosenzweig.  She was lovely and had some really interesting insights into festivals, fashion and Philadelphia.

festival fashion An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

Festivals and Fashion go hand in hand. Why do you think that is?

Well for one I think it’s because you’re there all day, you want to be comfortable and you want to look good and represent whatever it is that you’re into. I think that fashion plays a big role in culture and music…how you dress and what you listen to is who you are. Particularly now, there are so many bands and genres of music I think people are even more into presenting themselves in a particular way, to represent whatever group they’re a part of. It’s not so black and white anymore, it’s not like oh there’s a rock n roll person, or there’s a hip hop person, there are so many different interpretations of what that means.

Are you from Philly?

No, but I’ve lived in Philly for about five years now, and I always felt like there should have been something…Philly’s all about hometown pride so it surprised me that there wasn’t something that happened annually…there are some smaller festivals, but since I’ve lived here Philly has become such a progressive place. While it’s not New York or other big cities, there’s been a lot going on in philly over the last couple years that’s really caught my eye.

Like what?

Well the food aspect of the festival is important to me – Philly’s really becoming a food town.  Any time I talk to anybody outside of Philly, whether it’s about a festival or just friends they’re like ‘oh really, there are good restaurants? Really there’s a music scene?’ People think of it as a really small big city, and it is, but I think more people are finding room to do their own thing. That’s the cool thing about a city like this, you can be a big fish in a small pond. And you see that with companies like Urban Outfitters and these big restaurateurs, and the whole food truck thing is big here. Lately I’m finding more people who are thinking positively and don’t really have that perspective that cooler things are happening elsewhere.

philly An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

I’ve always thought that Philadelphia should have its own music festival…is that what you’re trying to do with POPPED!?

Yeah, I thought it should be a place that represents what the city is. For me, it really was about the park. Despite the weather, it’s still something I feel really passionate about. Fairmount Park is the largest park system in the country…it’s really difficult to get into the park system, and it’s not easy to deal with a city in general, in particular Philadelphia. But the city’s been really supportive of this and I really think it is because this isn’t just a generic block party, there are a lot of things – like fashion – that I’ve tried to focus this on – the food element, the music, curating it, being able to bring artists here that are relevant, that are in the press…all those things add to what makes a festival successful. We were able to bring a lot of press here that normally don’t come for an event in Philly. From the very beginning I’ve tried to think outside of Philadelphia, and how I can shine a light on Philly and show other people that this can be a destination, much like how Chicago is for Lollapalooza…you go out and eat, you hang out at the park, you’re enjoying not only the festival but the city as well.

philadelph An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

How would you describe style in Philadelphia?

I’ve been trying to figure that out for so long…I work at a home office, and I’m in New York a lot, so I save my outfits that I really care about for when I’m in New York. I think that people in Philly definitely dress down in comparison…but some of my favorite stores in the country are in Philly. Having Free People here is huge. Also I think people tend to forget that, they don’t think about that style being necessarily “Philadelphia.” It’s really hard to put your finger on it…there are all these themes, in different neighborhoods, like Fishtown has a kind of rock n roll urban cowboy type thing going on. It’s hard to define.

venues An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

What are some of your favorite music venues in Philly?

Well, Johnny Brenda’s is a really amazing place…and I haven’t been to Union Transfer yet, I really want to check that place out. I think it’s great there are a lot of smaller venues in Philly that give people the opportunity to play to a small group of really captivated people. I saw Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. at Kung Fu Necktie and it was the most amazing show…I’m definitely a small venue person.  That’s why I was probably the last person to say this venue was great, but I’m just blown away by how good the sound is. It feels intimate.

I think people, when they put care into a venue it really shows…I think Union Transfer did that, and Johnny Brendas definitely did that, and they did it well… when they built that place they really thought about one person’s experience.

cults An Interview with Alexis Rosenzweig, Executive Producer of POPPED!

What bands would you associate with Free People?

I felt like Cults totally nailed it…it’s a little girly, and they’ve got that 60s thing going, but it’s still very current.

Thank you so much Alexis and POPPED!

Loungewear for the FP Girl

September 27th, 2011 / Posted by fp jemma / Permalink

When the nights start drawing in I love nothing more than coming home from work putting on some comfortable clothes and lounging around. The nights are dark early.

So you have an excuse to just stay in and do nothing but be cozy. Comfortable clothes do a lot to your mood; it’s an indulgence that feels great. I’m excited about FP body, now I can be lazy in great clothes.

body Loungewear for the FP Girl

From our FP body buyer:

Describe FP body started from the basic seamless romper that was perfect for layering under all our sheer slips. We wanted to take comfortable basics to the next level and explore it in terms of lounge wear.  We felt our girl was too pretty and cool to be lounging around in boring sweats so we brought the FP aesthetic and created a range that is fashionably comfortable.

We didn’t want to limit ourselves when designing into this concept – we looked into great silhouettes that can be carried from indoor dressing to outdoor dressing, when styled carefully – for instances the fleecy sweat pants that are online right now are ideal for curling up on the sofa but then you can team them with some biker boots and a leather jacket and be ready to head out the door. The Kimonos are thrown on for some decorative warmth over your basic lounge wear but can also be worn in a cool way with jeans and a simple top for a night out.

FP body is comfort made fashionable!

What are your favorite pieces from the line?

The items I love the most are the ones that can transition from the indoors to the outdoors, the body hugging soft rompers are cute whilst the kimonos add that touch of fancy that can easly be taken as outerwear and you can never go wrong with a pair of cozy lined sweat pants

Could this be you….?

8:00AM: Jump off the subway in the shoes you picked up at the sample sale this past weekend.

8:05AM: Stop into your favorite café to grab a large coffee (you’re gonna need it) and Greek yogurt before heading into the office.

8:15AM: Get to your desk and get organized for the long (but fun) day ahead. You check up on email to make sure that none of the international stores emailed you with urgent matters throughout the night.

9:05AM: What’s this? Free People’s favorite boutique in San Francisco placed an order at the tradeshows, and now they’d like to double it? Great! Forward to your coworker, and then get back to pulling sales data for your boss. Thank god you’re an Excel expert ;)

9:45AM: Big meeting on the calendar at 10! Have to get all of your things together!

11AM: Post meeting time to organize your notes and email the international wholesale team to check up on some of the topics covered. It looks like they’ll be having market visits with big buyers and we want them to have the samples for next Spring to show.

12PM: Short break! Bruno’s dying to go out, and you’ve been running around all morning. First you stop to get a greek salad and green tea, then you head out to walk him for a short bit.

12:45PM: Back to work. You have to put together some packets that will be going out to wholesale’s clients.

1:30PM: Another meeting. This time you’re meeting with your boss and other coworkers about a strategy for getting the upcoming capsule collection into key stores. This takes a lot of analyzing past numbers and behaviors which you’ve been preparing for the past few days.  You take notes for her during the meeting, so that she doesn’t miss a thing.

2:30PM: You update your boss’s twitter – she asks you to do this sometimes when she’s crazy busy.

2:35PM: Yikes! Don’t forget you have to book her flight for next month (and also don’t forget she’s a vegetarian – you’ll want to select the vegetarian option for her).

3:30PM: Wow your eyes hurt from staring at these spreadsheets…check and see what today’s special is at the café. It’s pretzel day?! Time to grab Suzy and hit that up. Bruno will appreciate the added walk =P

3:45PM: Back to updating our best sellers. That’s so interesting that they ordered so many of that top. You wouldn’t think that it would be right for their customer. Hm..maybe you’ll want to have somebody check up on this.

4:30PM: Adding some appointments to your boss’s calendar. She needs to meet with Joe, Bob, and Heather about performance in the UK.

5PM: The phone rings. It’s her daughter, let her know she’s on the phone and pass her through.

6:00PM: End of day email check. It looks like you have to begin organizing a showroom appointment for October. You can start that tomorrow, but don’t forget to make a note in your color-coded calendar so you don’t forget!

6:15PM: What? It’s after six already!? You need to email Rachel very quickly to see what ever happened with those samples. Then you’ll get going! Hmm…what should you wear tomorrow?

The general consensus at the POPPED! music festival this weekend was that it was kind of a bummer the location was moved from an outdoor park to an indoor arena.  However, on the plus side? The sound was amazing! We got to see some awesome shows on Saturday and FP Naomi got some great shots from the photo pit – here are some of our favorite acts from Saturday!

Festival Fashion at POPPED!

September 26th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

On Saturday FP Naomi and I attended the POPPED! music festival, which took place at the Liacouras Center at Temple University’s campus – a last minute location change due to the bad weather forecast. The indoor location and dreary weather most likely had an effect on the fashion we saw, but there were a lot of elements that I think are pretty demonstrative of the fashion scene in Philadelphia.  This was on my mind for a large part of the day as we scoured the crowd, and during my conversation with POPPED! executive producer Alexis, a young, fashion-oriented woman. What is Philly style? I work with very fashionable people, so I’m surrounded by amazing style all day at work, but it’s not exactly representative of our city.  Judging by what we saw at POPPED!, Philly style is a bit of a mish-mash, with key elements like ripped denim or black biker boots, and a bit of a quirky edge found in the accessories – a pair of glasses, neon pops, funky prints , you name it.

Fall Fashion from our Favorite Bloggers!

Beautiful Elsa of the blog Styleabaad, who recently paid a visit to our home offices, shares one of her favorite looks and tells us what she’s excited about this Fall!

In this look: This vintage 1970’s maxi dress is the gem of my closet! I love wearing it in fall/winter and styling it in different ways depending on the occasion. Here I decided to dress it down a bit for a more casual fall look so I added a Free People vest, a stack of bangles and a floppy hat. The shoes and sunnies are vintage.

What trend are you most excited about for fall?

I am so into jewel colors right now like amber, sapphire and emerald. Also I can’t leave my house this fall without a hat – I love both fedoras and floppy hats and I don’t think I could have too many.

Favorite designers right now?

I always follow the shows but find myself more inspired by the archives. Like 1970’s YSL and Halston. But I have to say I adore Dries van Noten and Etro’s latest collections.

Your must have Free People item for fall?

I’m dying to get my hands on the Velvet Extreme Flares in the “moss” color! It’s the perfect piece for fall and I’ll wear them in the daytime with a thermal and oxfords and at nighttime with a sheer blouse and high heels.

What is your favorite fall activity?

I can’t imagine anything better than getting up really early a sunny fall morning and heading out to a big flea market. I love to wander around with a hot tea looking through the stalls and finding those treasures for my house I know are out there.

Check out Elsa’s blog here!
