Let’s Get Intimate
November 30th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / PermalinkWe can’t get enough of our new selection of intimates – rich textures, jewel tones and a touch of sparkle – these are the types of under-garments that you WANT to show! I’m imagining the velvet bike short under a sheer maxi or the sequin bandeau adding some sparkle under a layering top.
Here’s a little behind the scenes video from our current homepage shoot, featuring model Linda Vojtova!

DIY Event this Friday in Portland!
November 30th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / PermalinkYou’re getting two for one today!! Two DIY projects, that is :) This one is in relation to an event we are having at our Portland store this Friday 12/2!

Free People Portland is hosting a DIY Night on Friday Dec. 2nd with FP guest blogger Rachael Rice, who recently relocated from Vermont to Portland. She will be leading a workshop on how to make dream catchers using found and recycled materials, vintage trims, fabrics, and lace!
Her dream catchers are out of this world - and, Rachael created a piece just for the Portland store (pictured above) that will be raffled off, with a portion of the proceeds to go to Adopt-A-Family Portland!
At the workshop, you can make a dream catcher as a piece of art, or even smaller ones to wear as jewelry!
The workshop is $7 (includes supplies and cake!), or for $10 you can enter the raffle to win a huge dream catcher made by Rachael, AND attend the workshop. A portion of the proceeds from the raffle benefit Adopt-A-Family Portland.
Raffle tickets alone are $5. Drawing will be by Dec. 15th and announced on the Free People Portland Facebook page. So be sure to click “LIKE!”
For those of you who can’t attend the event, Rachael was kind enough to share this tutorial with the blog, explaining how to make part of the dream-catcher pictured above. Part of the piece features a garland made of plastic bottle “feathers” — easy and beautiful to make! This could also be made into a festival garland on its own, or cute earrings!
1. Start with clean plastic bottles. Clear works very nicely, but other colors are ok!
2. Carefully cut the top and bottom off the bottles using an X-acto knife, or sharp scissors. You can use the bottoms of the bottles to hold your “feathers” as you go along!
3. Cut the body of the bottle into segments.
4. Freehand cut some feather shapes out of the plastic.
5. Use a hole punch to put holes in one end of each piece. Make diagonal cuts on each side of the “feathers”. Add jump rings if you want, those are good if you’re making jewelry.
6. String your feathers using wire or ribbon, or attach to findings for sparkly jewelry. These garlands look amazing near Christmas lights, or just hanging around!
The also make lovely earrings! Just attach them to earring hooks :)

Right about now I wish I still lived in Portland – I’d love to go to the workshop and see the Dreamcatcher in person. Will definately have to make some earrings. Thank you for sharing!!

What a great idea & recyle use for pop bottles! You can use the top for a funnel. Thank you for your creativity!

DIY: Brighten Up Your Jewelry With Neon Thread!
November 30th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / PermalinkWhen it comes to accessories I’m in a bit of a neon crazy lately – I love this editorial from Cosmo Australia that I saw on Oracle Fox and set out to create lots of fun, laid-back-surfer-girl-style accessories that look awesome when layered heavily like the photo above. And before you go thinking you need to buy a bunch of supplies – I spent $0 on this DIY! I had a bunch of embroidery floss already (but if you don’t, you can buy it in bulk online or at craft stores) and went hunting through my box of old jewelry – dating way back to even as far as middle school – to find the jewelry I would use as the basis of this DIY.

Krazy glue will also come in handy for this DIY!

When it comes to gathering the accessories that will be the basis for this project – think outside the box!
On the left are some more standard necklaces and bracelets that I felt could use a little spicing up – on the right, some other random stuff I had lying around!
There are no rules or steps to this DIY – just get creative and see what you can come up with! To inspire you to get started, here’s what I created:

This lanyard cord was buried in a drawer and ended up being PERFECT for this DIY. I just cut off the metal clip part at the end.

Using brightly colored embroidery thread, I wrapped the thread around the cord in a random pattern, using the krazy glue to adhere it to the cord on the ends – which works amazingly well, it hasn’t budged! I want to get more cord like this so I can make a bunch of necklaces with different colors and patterns to layer all together.

For the one on the left, I braided some of the neon thread with a piece of hemp and attached it to the end of a simple silver chain. And a tip for the one on the right – this chain was pretty small, but if you dab some krazy glue on the end of the embroidery thread and pinch it together, you can form an almost needle-like tip that you can then use to weave the thread through the chain. I love the subtle color it adds!

I liked the way these colors accentuated the colors in the stone.

I love how they look all layered together! Now I just need someone to do my hair like the girl in the top photo…

A Walk in the Woods
November 29th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / PermalinkI am 100% without a doubt a summer person – I love the heat, I love the sun and the feeling of freedom that hangs in the humid air, even though you still have work. But I will admit, there is no better time of year for a good weekend hike than the fall. The crisp air is much more comfortable to work up a slight sweat, and the scenery is breathtaking. Not to mention, I love the sound of leaves shuffling under foot. Here are some photos from a fall hike in Fairmount Park – a place that lets you forget you’re in a city and reconnect with nature.
