For our Holiday catalog, “Through the Decades,” our Vintage buyer rounded up some incredible objects to represent the different decades explored in the book. And when it comes to the 1950s, it would be difficult to find something more iconic than the Wurlitzer Jukebox.
The Jukebox came of age in the 1940s but really reached its peak popularity in the 1950s when they were common in establishments ranging from diners to laundromats. They played an important role in the history of rock and roll, as they contained a counter that displayed how many times a certain record was played – popular records stayed in the jukebox, and less popular ones were switched out. It was in the 1950s that young men and women began listening to “rock and roll” – a new type of music heavily influenced by blues and the south, brought to the mainstream by artists like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly and Little Richard. Their music blasted out of jukebox speakers, making people dance and opening their ears to a sound that would change the course of music forever.
