As the weather gets warmer and the cold grey days float behind us our skin calls out to be bright. Lipstick can give a whole new cheery side to your face and give off a vibrancy that is captivating.
Red lipstick is the most go to colour when deciding on options – it’s classic and it’s fun, but it can sometimes overwhelm someone’s face if you choose the wrong shade. We took 3 girls up to our studio with different skin tones; a golden girl, a porcelain girl and girl with lovely dark olive skin to see what colour shade of red best suited them.
If you have a beautiful golden skin tone; a subtle orange red will best suit your complexion like Mac Mattene Lipstick in You Say Tomato . To prep her lips we used a Lip Scrub by Fresh and then softened the lips with a healing ointment from Eucerin. If you have thin lips it’s best to tap the top of the lipstick with your finger and then press the middle of your lips and work outwards – this will make you lips look fuller
If you have that beautiful milky skin tone we found that a red colour with a slight tinge of pink looks most pretty. We prep the lips same as above then smeared on Dragon Girl Matt Crayon from Nars. If you have fuller sweetheart lips then it best to go ahead and fill the whole lips in straight from the crayon – it will give them a nice pulp.
Tip: if you want to matt out any lip colour you can press a sheer powder on top lightly, it takes any shine you don’t want and gives the lip colour a longer staying power.
If you have an olive skin tone you already have a lot of great colour in your skin and a nice pigment in your lips. We think a tinted lip balm from the berry colour family looks great like Fresh Sugar Plum Lip Balm or you can choose your favorite lip colour and mix it in with your lip balm for a subtle shade. It will give the colour in your skin a little something extra special.
Tip: to find your natural lip colour bite your lips gently and the colour will rush to the front.
Here’s the product we used on the 3 girls, do you have a favorite shade of red?
