Thursday Poll: The April Catalog

Which shot has you most ready to hit the road and escape to music festival wonderland for a bit?

The April catalog is here! The book depicts models Jacquelyn Jablonski, Hailey Clauson, Luisa Bianchin, and Kate Harrison as they travel through the desert on their way to a music festival. The clothes are simple and easy – mixtures of texture, pattern, simple frocks, and of course, lots of crochet and fringe. Which shot has you most ready to hit the road and escape to music festival wonderland for a bit?

Really over the disgusting cultural appropriation. It ruined an otherwise lovely catalogue.

If you’re talking about the feather headdress, I think they might deserve a little more credit. That doesn’t really stylistically resemble anything Native American at all, except that it has feathers and is on someone’s head.

I do think Free People has gone over the line many times in the past (and they still sell that ridiculously named Alaskan Cree boot), but it does seem like they are doing a much better job (well in the two months or so) of not making pseudo native looking-ish products attached to a random tribe name. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing native american inspired designs (or better yet, selling stuff from artists who make their livelihood through traditional craft and art), but I wish they would do a better job of ASKING to use a traditional design and then compensating the group that owns it (although hopefully after that lawsuit this point is moot).

Anyways, hopefully now the copyright stuff will be enforced and Free People will continue to make its beautiful clothes, and in a more respectful manner :) At least they didn’t sell Navajo panties!
