Saturday Tunes

An oldie but goodie… I go through phases where pretty much all I want to listen to is Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks and this was one of those weeks. There is something about this album that tugs at my heartstrings in a way few others do – especially the song “You’re a big girl now.” Not to mention the album opener is one of my all-time favorite songs!

I first heard about Julia Holter a little while back, but it wasn’t until more recently that I really started listening to and appreciating her music for what it is – beautiful, and completely unlike anything I’ve heard.  I love when you can’t compare an artist to anyone else, and that is definitely true of her work.  Her music is recorded mostly alone – an astonishing fact when you listen to the multiple layers of vocals and instruments used in each song.  Yet she stitches everything together so seamlessly, creating beautiful and complex musical landscapes that sound as if they’re being listened to through a sonic kaleidoscope.

The Lumineers are a folk trio from Denver, Colorado, who just released their self-titled debut last month and I’ve been listening to it a lot lately.  It’s easy to, being only 42 minutes long in its entirety and full of sweet tunes like “Flowers in Your Hair,” “Dead Sea” and the irresistible “Ho Hey.” I’m excited to see them play live later this summer at WXPN’s music festival!
