I don’t want to accept it. Somehow, summer has flown by and we find ourselves facing down fall and all that comes with it. I don’t have anything against fall, but I am a summer girl through and through, so I’ve decided to make a list of activities that encapsulate the joy of summer and try to accomplish as many as I can during this last weekend of summer bliss.
1. Ride A Roller Coaster
Roller coasters are strongly associated with summer in my mind, specifically those on the Ocean City boardwalk. It doesn’t matter if it’s not a big scary roller coaster, you still feel that thrill as it slowly climbs to its highest point and, with a rush of wind and adrenaline, catapults you back down towards the ground. Let go and throw your hands up in the air, and feel the wind rush through your fingertips.
2. Dive In
One of my favorite feelings in the world is the rush you get when you run into the ocean and dive into a wave, the chill of the salt water against sun-warmed skin and the dark, mysterious depth of the ocean enveloping you. Even diving into a swimming pool has a similar rush and the nostalgic feeling of childhood and days spent at local public pools. Find a beach, lake, swimming hole or pool and dive in one last time and revel in the feeling of being completely under water.
3. Bike It
Spend one day using only your bike to get around. There is something so romantic about riding a bike, the activity in itself just makes you happy. It also takes you back to the days before you had a car and bikes were the only way to get around, which is always nice to relive every once in a while.
4. Go Collecting On The Beach Or In A Park
There’s something incredibly peaceful about beach combing. I especially love doing it in the early morning or in the evening, when you have the beach primarily to yourself and can enjoy the sound of waves gently crashing on the shore. If you can’t get to a beach, simply spend a day in a park or somewhere outside. Gather fallen leaves, stones, flowers, and allow yourself to appreciate nature and the simple beauty of the outdoors. Maybe even make yourself a flower crown!
5. Road Trip It
Take a mini road trip with your friends or significant other. You don’t have to go far – and sometimes the best journeys don’t have a destination. One of my friends and I used to try to get lost – we would drive aimlessly, making random turns and not paying attention to where we were going, and once we had no idea where we were we’d try to find our way back. Another idea – pick a really beautiful scenic location as your destination, and go there to watch the sunset. Make sure you have a good soundtrack, roll the windows down, sing along and watch the scenery go by.
6. Read A Book
One of my absolute favorite things about summer is waking up at the beach and sitting on the porch with some coffee and a good book. It’s such a relaxing way to start the day. Reading in the park is equally awesome – bring a blanket and spend a day lying around reading in the sun!
7. Eat An Ice Cream Cone
I have to say, it has been way too long since I’ve done this, so I’m making it a necessity this weekend. Ice cream is heavenly on a hot summer day, and even better out of a cone.
What is everyone doing this Labor Day weekend?
