Wild Nothing – Nocturne
This is one of the most beautiful albums I’ve heard in a while. I can’t stop listening to it, reveling in its lush melodies and gentle beauty. At a time when the music industry is flooded with shoe-gazing, dreamy indie pop, Wild Nothing set themselves apart with this impeccable album. Go for a walk on a beautiful fall day with headphones on and this album playing, and let it lead you on a journey through nature. It is gorgeous from start to finish, but I especially love “Nocturne,” “Through The Grass,” and “Counting Days.”
The XX – Coexist
The XX is finally back! Their 2009 debut was one of my favorites from that year, and I’ve been eagerly waiting to see how they would follow it up. On their new album they reveal a very stripped down version of their sound, with Romy Madley Croft whispering lyrics over sparing guitar and hushed percussion. Whereas their last album opened with the building, anticipatory “Intro,” Coexist starts with the hushed “Angels,” setting the tone for a very quiet yet beautiful record. Put it on when you’re at home by yourself or lazing around with your loved one, turn it up and appreciate its subtle beauty while losing yourself in daydreams.
David Byrne & St. Vincent – Love This Giant
I am a big fan of David Byrne and pretty much everything he does, so when I heard he was collaborating on an album with St. Vincent I had a feeling it would be amazing. St. Vincent (Annie Clark), broke out with her hit “Cruel” off her album Strange Mercy, winning audiences over with her sweet voice and catchy tunes. David Byrne’s voice is so recognizable it overshadows her a bit in some cases on this collaboration, but she also holds her own impressively well. Put this on as you’re getting ready for a night out with friends!
Grizzly Bear – Shields
The new Grizzly Bear album technically comes out next week but you can stream it now on NPR! The follow up to 2009’s breakout album Veckatimest picks up where they left off, with sweeping instruments and gorgeous melodies that set an atmosphere that feels very much like Fall. Listening to it makes me feel like I should be bundled up in a cozy sweater, walking outside with leaves rustling around at my feet. I love the opener “Sleeping Ute,” “Yet Again,” and especially “gun-shy.”
