DIY Pumpkin Candles

UPDATE: This post originally ran on October 4th 2012 but with Thanksgiving coming up we wanted to share it again since these would make lovely decorations!

It’s that time of year…pumpkins are pretty much everywhere you look, and I don’t mind one bit – there is something about their plump orange appearance that is so loveable. Plus, in addition to making great decorations, they’re also pretty delicious.  I had some wax left over from my homemade lip balm so I decided to use it to make some candles – and then I thought, why not turn mini pumpkins into candles?

What you need: a small pumpkin (or several :)), a sharp knife, a spoon, candle wicks, wax and if you want, scented oil. I got my mini pumpkins from the grocery store and all other supplies from A.C. Moore – you should be able to find wax and candle wicks at your local arts & crafts store!

Start by cutting the top off of the pumpkin – you can cut a small hole around the stem, or slice the whole top portion off, it’s up to you.

Next use a spoon to remove the insides of the pumpkin (maybe use the insides to make a delicious pumpkin dish!) Make sure to get the inside of the pumpkin as clean as possible.

Place a wick inside the pumpkin. If you want, you can put a dab of glue to hold it in place, but I just dug the metal ring into the bottom of the pumpkin and it stayed put – plus, once you pour in the wax the wick won’t go anywhere. Now it’s time to melt your wax. You can use a sauce pan on medium heat, or a double boiling method – boil water in one pot, and heat the wax in a smaller sauce pan placed over the pot. If you’d like, you can add in a few drops of scented oil like vanilla or cinnamon! I used cinnamon and it smells amazing.

Once the wax is melted, pour directly into your pumpkin.  If you want it to cool quickly, stick the pumpkins in the fridge, or just let them sit overnight.  I put mine in the fridge and the wax hardened in less than an hour.

Your pumpkin candles are now ready to be lit! These make great table decorations or Halloween party décor.
