Inspiration: Ernest & The Hemingways

Dree Hemingway is definitely one of my personal style muses. I have always loved the way she dresses but more than that, she has such a strong presence and eyes that seem to look right through you with their powerful gaze. It’s hard to ignore her impressive ancestry as well, starting with her great-grandfather – legendary writer Ernest Hemingway.

Ernest Hemingway is probably best known for his novels such as The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises, and his understated style of writing. He was a vagabond, a man who faced death many times in his life, saw multiple wars (he was an ambulance driver during World War I and a reporter in World War II who put his life in danger to accurately describe the conditions of war), traveled around the world, and shared his knowledge and experiences through his writing. My favorite work of his is A Moveable Feast, a series of memoirs about his time in Paris in the 1920s where he was part of a circle of American writers who lived in Paris that included Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein – the so-called “lost generation.”

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

Dree’s mother, Mariel Hemingway, is the daughter of Jack Hemingway (the child pictured in the image above with Ernest and his former wife Hadley). A natural beauty, she became an actress best known for her role in the Woody Allen film Manhattan (pictured above). Today, she also hosts a series of yoga videos.

Margaux Hemingway was Mariel’s older sister, who was a successful model in her early years. I can definitely see Dree in both Mariel and Margaux, with the deep, dark eyes and structured features.  She carries the Hemingway name with grace and pride and it’s easy to see why she is a huge style inspiration in today’s fashion world. Who are some of your personal style muses?
