The Inspiration Behind Our Limited Edition Skateboards

I first spotted these incredible painted skateboards in a holiday meeting back in summer, and they stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn’t believe my eyes… a Free People skateboard? My dreams had come true. After months of patiently waiting, they are now up online and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. They’re so beautiful I don’t know if I’ll even have the heart to use it, I might just hang it on my wall as the work of art that it is! These would make amazing gifts for the holiday season, too. I caught up with the artist behind these beautiful limited edition boards, our color and print designer, to find out where she got her inspiration.

Designer Inspiration: an old Italian Vogue spread, and initial designs.

“It was great to be able to work on a new product. I love apparel but since the boards had no limitations I just collaged together some of my favorite paintings and sketches that never made it into the FP collection.  A lot of the drawings were based on traditional artwork from different places I have traveled, like the carved wooden doors in Bali, henna in Morocco, and suzani embroidery.  I wanted to update these traditional ideas in a Free People way!”

HOW GORGEOUS! As a female skater it is SO hard to find boards that aren’t overtly masculine or girly boards that try too hard to be girly. this is beautiful and feminine. LOVE it!

if i bought one, id be to scared to ruin the artwork!!

I don’t skate but these are beautiful! i kind of want one now

Kayla -November 6, 2012, 9:22PM

I love them all, but I have my heart goes to the one on the right! If only I could get a FreePeople design on my longboard…

Catherine -November 6, 2012, 9:23PM

Just a thought: the number of girls and women in the longboarding community vastly outnumber the number of women in the street skating community. FP should consider teaming up with a longboard company and producing a line of FP longboards. I’d shell out some cash for a downhill deck with a beautiful design like those pictured above.

I love them all, but I have my heart goes to the one on the right! If only I could get a FreePeople design on my longboard… ;D

these are waay too girly for my taste..iespecially when it comes to skating, I would love a free people skateboard with a little more edge. something bohemian for sure but less pink and flowery. am i asking too much? im asking for too much
