5 Ways To Exercise Outside In Winter

The thought of exercising outside in winter is not exactly appealing to me… I am not a fan of the cold. However, it is more appealing to me than the idea of going to a gym. In an attempt to motivate myself, I’ve made a list of 5 ways I want to get outside and exercise this winter.   Not only is the exercise clearly good for you, but the fresh air and time spent in natural sunlight can do wonders for your mental well-being.

take a hike

Take A Hike

Get bundled up in your coziest sweater and hiking boots, and go hiking! It doesn’t even have to be a strenuous hike, as long as you’re getting your heart rate up.  Last winter I hiked Overlook Mountain in Woodstock and it was one of the most beautiful experiences – just challenging enough but also not so challenging that I couldn’t enjoy it and stop to take photos along the way :). The reward of reaching your hike’s destination is also an exhilarating feeling.

run

Run

Believe me, I don’t necessarily jump at the idea of getting up in the morning and going for a run, especially when it’s freezing outside. But if you think about it, once you’re running you start to warm up, and it’s much more comfortable than running in the sweltering heat of summer (which can be incredibly taxing for your body).  Running in winter is a great way to combat any potential holiday weight gain and the scenery is also much more beautiful than staring at a wall or TV while on the treadmill!

snowboard

Ski Or Snowboard

Head on up to the closest mountain for a day of skiing or snowboarding – or better yet, make a weekend of it! I’m going to the Poconos in February for a weekend with friends and I can’t wait. I don’t consider myself a skier or a snowboarder but I’m willing to try! Not only is it great exercise, but you’ll have fun doing it.

Snow Dog

Walk Your Dog

Take your dog for a nice long walk! Or, if you don’t have a dog, join a friend who does :). Romp around in the snow with them and you’ll be out of breath in no time – plus, your dog will love you for it!

sledding

Play in the Snow

Playing in the snow is a great way to burn calories and get your heart rate up! Have a snowball fight, make snow angels, and go sledding with friends. The best part of that long climb back up the hill is getting to come back down again :).

What’s your favorite way to exercise outside in winter?

Something I do everyday (5) days a week is workout, it’s the best thing for you!
I love to run outside or hiking up a mountain! I compete in the Warrior Dash or Spartan Races…
I live by 4 major ski resorts but I am not made for that, haha “too cold”.
It’s great to get up and do some sort of physical activity ~ so rewarding.
Off to the gym as we speak…have a great day ladies!

I am from a Northern country and, of course, I love winter (well, since it is about 6 months long here). Skiing cross-country, ice-skating, snow hiking, orienteering, rogaine – it is my entire winter life. Clean fresh air, great forest views, warm house and sauna after – winter is so awesome if you are properly dressed, that is the main secret.

‘m in the Poconos right now!! and I went hiking this morning, haha. Have fun!!! There is so much to do here and I don’t know about in February but it’s been snowing all day and there is about 4 inches of snow on the ground.

I love playing in the snow but we havn’t had even an inch this year. I like to ride my bike to places like the movie theatre and my grandmothers house. It’s great to see her face when I surprise her with a vistit. The ride back home is the hard part and usually the coldest part too.

I really needed this post. I love the idea of running but not do I hate getting up and freezing. You are right and it does warm up quickly. I am going to have to keep reminding myself of that.

Skating and/or playing hockey are great ways to warm up and exercise in the winter!
Also cross-country skiing-no resort or mountain needed, if you live somewhere with lots of snow everywhere….

I can only dream of being able to run outside in the winter… :(
