It’s no secret that we love yoga at Free People… it might be one of our favorite ways to work out, and simultaneously clear the mind. We love it so much we even launched our own yoga line earlier this year, FP Movement! I caught up with the new yoga instructor here at URBN, Stacia Nero, to learn more about her and the type of yoga she practices. I love what she has to say about how yoga has changed her life. I can definitely relate personally to her issues with anxiety and how yoga has helped alleviate this problem. Read on for an interview with Stacia and stay tuned because she’ll be demonstrating some of her favorite yoga poses here on the blog and explaining what they do and why they’re so beneficial!

What is your favorite type of yoga to practice and why?
My favorite type of yoga is Vinyasa (flow). I teach Vinyasa with focus on anatomy but when I go to practice I enjoy both Vinyasa and Anusura inspired classes. I enjoy classes that allow you to enjoy constant breath and movement. It’s so freeing when yoga can become a trance and your mind can just let go.
How has yoga changed or benefited your lifestyle?
I am wired as an anxious person – it has affected my health and state of mind my whole life. I found yoga at a low point in my life when anxiety attacks were plaguing my school, my work, and my social life. Yoga helps me breathe, and take things as they come. I stopped seeing everything and feeling everything as if it were the end of the world. I have not had an anxiety attack since I have started practicing shaping me into a much calmer, more present individual. I am a much happier person.
What environment do you like to do yoga in? Do you listen to music, and if so what?
I like to do yoga in a classroom with teachers who inspire me – I practice at studios all over the city. I also enjoy outdoor yoga when the weather permits it. There is nothing better than having an awesome music track going on in the background! I enjoy an eclectic soundtrack in my classroom from indie to hip-hop to jazz funk. Artists I play often are Thievery Corporation, Krishna Das, Beats Antique, Sufjan Stevens, Amadou and Mariam, The Black Keys, Adele, Air, Kalya Scintilla, etc.
What do you like to wear while doing yoga?
What’s in your yoga bag?
My jade yoga mat, water bottle, sweat towel, my iPod, lavender oil (massage oil for my students in shavasana), incense, and my jewelry.
What is your favorite healthy snack?
I love fresh fruit – apples, plums, berries, kiwi, and avocados!
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
You have to be what you want to receive and the best relationship is the one you have with yourself.
