Video: Inside Our Vintage Buyer’s Incredible Home

Our Vintage Buyer Ali is one of those characters you spend an hour with and you feel like you’ve taken an adventure around the world and back again. She’s one of those people that I always find myself being drawn to, mainly because her passion for vintage is as big as the universe and beyond. She can ramble on about items she finds at flea markets for hours and hours and soaks in enough knowledge about them worthy for an entire book to be written.

With her incredible eye for vintage and her fascination with the trade, throughout her life she has carefully curated a vintage collection that’s museum-worthy. We took a look inside her home, “my ship…” she calls it, to find out more about Ali’s vintage life, and it’s evident that this trade isn’t just Ali’s career and passion, but it’s her whole heart.

Here’s a sneak peak into our Vintage Buyer’s home:

Thanks for letting us see this wonderful house! I love many of the same things. I live in New Mexico and have many similar items:, Pendletons, moccasins, turquoise, etc. I work in one of the Northern Pueblos here; she would love to shop out here in the Southwest, I also have found great things at Western Pawn up in Billings, Montana; this place is full of regalia, blankets, tipis, jewelry, etc. When I visit family there I always stop in and come home with something incredible. Happy shopping!!!

This was really cool and I love her house! However she’s supposed to be a vintage expert and I have to say I found several flaws with her descriptions on her vintage clothes. The Harley shirt is not from the 50s or 40s. Not possible for one the logo is a 1960s-70s logo and it has a 7 digit phone number on it. 7 digit phone numbers were not wide spread until the later 60s/ early 70s and they didn’t make Harley logo shirts unless you were a motorcycle racer and those would have been hand done not silk screened like more modern tees. Her early women’s boots are not women’s boots they are White’s lumberjack boots made for men and they still make them identical today. Turn of the century women’s feet were extermely small and narrow and there is no way a modern woman could wear turn of the century boots unless you have freakishly tiny feet. I own a pair that are identical that were my grandpa’s in the 70s and my husband has a new pair for his work that are the exact same. You can look closely in the video and see the logo stamped on the side of the boot. Google White’s boots if you want a pair. Sorry but I am a vintage clothes/history geek and I couldn’t help but point it out.

thanks Wendy….. Not sure I could have made it through this post without you knowing that 7 digit phone numbers didn’t happen until the 60s and 70s. Whew! Happy New Year. :/

Ali’s home is indeed very beautiful, you can see her passion for these pieces of clothing, accessories, blankets etc in the way she has arranged her home around these items. I am interested in knowing more about her career path and how she became the vintage buyer for Free People, where did she attend school, meet her mentors she mentioned in the video and such? Thanks!

Coco – I’m wondering the same thing about how one becomes a “vintage buyer”! Or if they (or any other company) buy collections from individuals? We just moved and I have around thirty-five 30 gallon totes full of a range of vintage clothing. It would be a full-time job to sell them on eB*y, but I have no where else to go with them living in a tiny Oklahoma town! Thrift Stores here are really cheap and there’s a lot of room for profit! Have a sold the idea yet of a distant buyer? :)

Ali is inspired by all of the same things that inspired me to create my line of Asha Wolfe dog coats… I would love for her to see them. They are handmade from suede, handworked leather, deerskin and vintage camp/Pendleton blankets. The cut is similar to a saddle blanket, derived from my equestrian background. I’ve been told by several Free People employees that my dog coats should be in FP, but I’m not sure of the proper way to submit? My website is http://www.ashawolfe.com. Thanks!
