Monday Quote: The Cold Of Winter

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”

– John Steinbeck

I think I’ve mentioned this before…no, I know I have. I am a summer person. But on Friday afternoon the sky opened up and big, beautiful flakes of snow swirled outside our office windows, and it felt like we were inside a snow globe.  Winter has its charm, and it definitely makes summer all that much sweeter :).

I hate snow, but this year I was sort of ready for it. I have to agree, I am a summer person as well. We haven’t had much of a winter here in Kansas and today it is 70 degrees outside, which is not normal. It just doesn’t feel like winter this year

This is such a great quote, and couldn’t come at a better time for me. I’ve been trapped inside a country house, alone, with a blizzard outside for eight days. As a California girl born and bred housesitting in the UK, at first I thought the solitude would be great to just relax and catch up on some reading, but by the end of it I was losing my mind. On the ninth day, when I woke to clear sunnies skies and melting snow, I had a completely spiritual experience. I felt like I’d never truly appreciated the a gorgeous sunny day before. The experience was not fun, but now I really understand what a gift the spring and summer are. Great quote to end January on, and good to remind yourself of year round as well!

Really like the Steinbeck quote. Trying to site this quote in an essay. Does anyone know what page it’s on and the publisher?
