Today’s recipe comes from our new contributor Kelsi Windmiller.
Hello, my name is Kelsi Windmiller and I am very exited to be a guest contributor for the BLDG 25 blog! I have been visiting this blog since it was created in 2006 and am continuously impressed with its lovely topics and sentiments. I am an illustrator, chef, tattoo artist, cyclist, and lover of music. I studied art in college and learned to cook from many talented chefs in the Philadelphia area (and my mother, of course). I have been working in kitchens for the past nine years and feel lucky to have a career in a field I am so passionate about. Last year I had the opportunity to create some vegan/vegetarian dishes for the home office employees at their café in the navy yard. It was a great experience and I made some lovely new friends. When it comes to cooking at home I like to keep the focus on a few healthy ingredients. This keeps my recipes clean, simple, and easy to make.
To start off the New Year I would like to share a detoxifying broccoli smoothie recipe. I know it may sound a bit strange, but it really is delicious. Broccoli is contains a large serving of fiber, which aids digestion and keeps you feeling full. Use mostly florets for this recipe because they contain the most nutrients. Antioxidant rich parsley really makes this smoothie green and bright. The sweetness comes from the bananas; just make sure they are ripe so you can avoid adding additional sweeteners. Bananas also add potassium to this smoothie, which you might need to fight off some New Year’s day woes. The sea salt and lemon juice are key in this recipe and if you love snacking on half an avocado sprinkled with sea salt as much as I do, then you understand why. It all blends together into a vibrant, velvety, deliciously healthy smoothie! I hope you enjoy.
Broccoli Smoothie (Vegan + Gluten-Free)
Yields two large smoothies
1/2 head Organic Broccoli
1cup Fresh Flat Leaf Parsley
1 Avocado
2 Ripe Bananas
Juice From 1 Whole Lemon
2 pinches Sea Salt
12oz Almond Milk
2cups Ice Cubes
Add all ingredients to a blender, blend until smooth and serve immediately.

This is such an amazing recipe! The smoothie is sweet and completely satisfying. The banana added the perfect amount of sweetness! I am so excited to see what other recipes this newcomer brings to the table! Yummm
Could I make this in a juicer as well? Do you think it would have the same effect?
Would love to see some recipes for juicers!
Was just wondering – would using regular milk completely change the taste? I can’t seem to find almond milk but this smoothie does sound pretty awesome.
Thanks, looking forward to new recipes! :D
Made this smoothie this morning and I loved it! It was suuuper satisfying and delicious. I suggest adding just a touch of honey to take the edge off the broccoli taste. Great recipe!!
Hi honey. Thought you might like this!
I just made this, and it is wonderful! The lemon adds such an unexpected freshness to it. I’m so happy that a smoothie recipe was featured. I can not purchase a decent juicer in the foreseeable future and so to be able to make a healthy (not sugar filled) smoothie is great.
just made it this morning! amazing!
would using vanilla flavoured almond milk change the taste?
This sounds great! I have never tried broccoli in a blender before, but now it’s time. :)
I just made this smoothie and it tasted ah-mazing!! i added a hint of vanilla to make it a teensy bit sweeter and it was just the touch it needed for me. but it tasted really good w/o it too. I will definitely be making this often in the mornings, it’s just so quick and easy
It’s awesome to visit this web page and reading the views of
