Who To See At SXSW: Our Festival Playlist

Just a couple more days until I head down to sweet, sunny Austin for SXSW! If you’ve been to SXSW before or are going, then you probably know – it can be a little bit overwhelming. Trying to navigate a massive list of shows, artists playing multiple venues, and the endless parties can leave you feeling frazzled and anxious.  It’s important to go with one thing in mind: You won’t be able to see everything. So, focus on a handful of shows that you really want to see and leave a good portion of your time unscheduled – otherwise you’ll just be running from place to place in a panic. In hopes that we can be of some help to those of you who will be in Austin this week, we’ve put together our list of must-see shows and a playlist below. What shows are on your list? Who are you most excited to see?

Iggy & The Stooges: It was just announced last week that Iggy & The Stooges will be playing, and I’m slightly bummed that the show is taking place Wednesday night before I get there. But that doesn’t mean you should miss it – they are playing at Austin’s (arguably) best venue, the Mohawk (you may remember, we shot a catalog there a couple of years ago!).

Jim James: In support of his solo album Regions of Sound and Light and God, Jim James is making several SXSW appearances. I’m hoping to catch him at Auditorium Shores on Friday and at a record signing at Waterloo on Saturday.

Sky Ferreira: Sky Ferreira will also be making several appearances – The Mohawk on Wednesday, 1100 Warehouse on Thursday, and Stubb’s on Saturday, which is where I’ll most likely catch her – followed by Haim and Vampire Weekend!

Caveman: I love hanging out with these guys, they are always so much fun – and I’m excited to hear some new music from them down in Austin! They’ll be playing Thursday at Bar 96, and the Urban Outfitters backlot on Saturday.

The Flaming Lips: This was another more recent announcement, and I certainly won’t pass up the opportunity to see this band in Austin! They are playing at The Belmont on Thursday.

Foxygen: I just missed Foxygen here in Philly so I’m making sure I don’t miss them at SXSW too. They’re playing at Red 7 on Thursday night, followed by Phosphorescent and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, two other bands I would like to see.

Youth Lagoon: I’ve really been enjoying the new Youth Lagoon album and can’t wait to hear the new stuff live. They’ll be playing Friday night at Club De Ville.

Local Natives: Another recent favorite – and they are also playing at the Mohawk, on Thursday night.

Devandra Banhart: Lastly, Devandra Banhart also recently announced a SXSW appearance that will take place on Saturday at Central Presbyterian Church. I’ve been hearing great things about his new music and can’t wait to hear it!

So those are my top picks for SXSW! If you’re going, who are you most excited to see??

I have never really been SUPER into the Flaming Lips but I saw them in Ohio last summer at the All Good Music Festival and goodness did they put on a killer show! It was full of cool effects, crazy tricks and lots and lots of dancing. You will certainly enjoy yourself.
