The Beauty Of Star Gazing

“Magic exists. Who can doubt it, when there are rainbows and wildflowers, the music of the wind and the silence of the stars? Anyone who has loved has been touched by magic. It is such a simple and such an extraordinary part of the lives we live.”

~ Nora Roberts

I believe in magic, every time I look at the stars in the sky long enough the feeling of magic runs through me. The longer you stare the more they appear, captivating you more and more second by second. I remember the first time I saw the night sky encrusted with stars in depth. I was 18 years old and woke up at 3am to drive to an air field, where we were going to set up a stall for a flea market. We wanted to get there early as it was first come, first serve. Having 3 hours to kill we decided to lay on the car roof looking at the clear sky. Our surroundings were pitch black – no buildings, no street lights, just open fields. I had never before seen the sky so encrusted with stars. I was drawn in and magic seemed to be all around me, one shooting star, two shooting stars. Then the sun started to rise and they all faded away.

Star gazing is beautiful, it creates another world around you. Have you ever seen any constellations while star gazing? The only ones I have seen are the Big Dipper, Little Dipper and Orion’s Belt.

I remember for a school project we were supposed to write a star journal. My father threw himself wholeheartedly into the project. He would take me out in the cold autumn air and point out all the gods and creatures that the greeks had chosen to see in the stars. It was lovely.

I love stargazing. Unfortunately I live in a really bright city (NYC) and sometimes depending on how cloudy it is and where you stand between the streetlights you may or may not see anything at all. Which sucks. But my block has really tall trees that block out the lights enough for me to make out stars. I’ve made it a habit to look up at the night sky every time I take my dog on his last walk of the day. Usually around 11pm when it’s dark and if the sky is clear, good lord can you see at least the Dippers clearly. That and I always gaze at the moon and tend to track its cycle. I just love it. I took an astronomy class in college cause I need science credits and it just spawned a whole different kind of love. Plus, it’s relaxing and it’s a shame most people take advantage of the night sky and really don’t marvel in its beauty. I really do wish though I could just lay in a field and watch the stars without all the lights and buildings around.

loved this post. there are very few things i love more than staring a star-filled sky. it’s so incredibly beautiful and makes you realize how small we are in comparison to the universe. i only had to take one science credit in college, so naturally i chose astronomy. one of the best classes i ever had. my cabin in the mountains was the place i first star-gazed, then i went to lake powell in utah….. no towns for miles and miles and miles, just a giant lake surrounded by gorgeous red and orange rock formations and at night, with no moon, pitch black. you could see the milky way like a gray line across the sky. i slept underneath the stars every night because i just wanted to stare at the sky as i fell asleep. unbelievable. haven’t seen more shooting stars in my life. i won’t ever forget that sight. i’ve only ever made out the big and little dipper and orion’s belt with my own memory, but i have a constellation app that’s awesome! goskywatch! it tracks your location, you point it at the sky and it tells you what you’re looking at! it even points out planets and other masses besides stars! it’s an awesome app to have if you’re going on a trip where you know you’ll see a ton of stars!
