The History Of British Picnicking

Come spring all I can think about is having a picnic. It used to be one of my favorite things to do when I lived in the UK. While I was living in Bristol studying at university, a group of us used to make cucumber and cheese and Branston pickle sandwiches, buy a bottle of wine and head to the canal with a blanket. It was a great way to watch the day slip away and have a little gossip.

Now that spring is on its way, these memories are slipping back and making me lust for a great countryside to nestle into with a sweet picnic. It’s astonishing that picnics evolved from the Renaissance era, when the medieval hunting feast used to be taken outside and laid on the floor to enjoy. This spring I will definitely be trying to bring a little taste of Britain to America by having some British-inspired picnics.

Hi!!

I am studying abroad in London in the fall for my Master’s degree, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for places to go or things to do in the city or surrounding areas?? Where should I picnic? :)

Thanks!

Hi Jemma, just stumbled across your blog. I have designed the luxury mobile picnic hamper, a little piece of England available to all, it takes the humping out of the hamper but retains all the elegance and sophistication of a really stylish picnic.
