Musical Highlights From Indio

The lineup for this year’s festival in Indio, California was pretty incredible, and one of the hardest things about being at a festival is not being able to see every band you want to see. Sometimes just going with the flow is the best approach, and some of the bands you didn’t plan on seeing end up being your favorite shows.  On Friday we got to the festival later in the day and spent the afternoon documenting fashion around the grounds before heading to the outdoor stage for Local Natives. They played as the sun went down, creating one of the most beautiful scenes of the weekend.  I was blown away by their energy and the beauty of their voices on songs like “You and I,” which they opened with. They played several songs from their new album Hummingbird, including the beautiful “Colombia,” and some favorites from their previous album like “Wide Eyes” and “Who Knows Who Cares.” It was definitely a highlight not only from Friday but the festival as a whole – here are some photos from their show!

Following Local Natives, on the same stage, was Beach House.  The last time I saw them was their show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York last year, which was an incredible show that took place on the night they released their latest album.   I didn’t feel like the festival setting was as conducive to their sound as a smaller venue, but they still sounded and looked amazing!

We ended Friday night with two recently-reunited British bands, Blur and the Stone Roses. Blur was another one of my favorites from the whole weekend – they played an amazing mix of some of their biggest hits (“Song 2” was so much fun to hear at a festival!) and personal favorites like “Beetlebum” and “Coffee and TV.” The Stone Roses were one of the bands I was most excited to see. They closed out the main stage on Friday night to a surprisingly small crowd that gave the show an intimate feel it otherwise wouldn’t have had. They opened with their hit “I Wanna Be Adored” and I thought it was pretty funny that the drummer came out wearing a flower crown!

The first show I caught on Saturday was Bat For Lashes. I had never seen them live but Natasha Khan is amazing and I couldn’t wait to see what she would be wearing! She came out in a rainbow colored dress/cape that moved incredibly with her as she performed, and she had the biggest, sweetest smile on her face the whole time.

More to come! What was your favorite musical moment from Coachella 2013? Mine was Yeasayer closing with “Ambling Alp” :).
