Recipe: Peanut Butter & Hemp Seed Dog Treats

In honor of our new Pet Project items, we have a special recipe today: homemade dog treats from Kelsi Windmiller!

We all want our pets to be healthy and happy, so we should try to take care of them just like we try to take care of ourselves. Many pets are fed straight from packaged goods that have been processed and preserved (imagine how you would feel if you ate like that!). Homemade meals and treats are very easy to create — it just takes a little more time than opening a bag of store-bought biscuits. I would like to share with you my peanut butter and hemp seed treat recipe. Dogs love peanut butter and it contains a healthy amount of protein. Hemp seeds add all of the essential amino acids and can help maintain a healthy and shiny coat. So treat that special canine in your life to some healthy homemade dog treats.

Peanut Butter & Hemp Seed Dog Treats

2c Whole Wheat Flour

1/8 c Hemp Seeds

1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder

1c Natural Chunky Peanut Butter

1c Milk or Water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine the flour, baking powder, and hemp seeds in a mixing bowl. In another bowl, combine the milk and peanut butter with an electric mixer. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the milk and peanut butter until thick dough forms. Remove from bowl and kneed for a few minutes on a lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough to ¼ inch thickness. Cut dough with a cookie cutter or a knife. Bake on a flat baking sheet lined with parchment paper for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size. Let the treats cool completely before sharing. Store in a covered container for keeping.

I have heard that hemp seed is poisonous unless boiled first, I don’t think this is correct or else you wouldn’t have used it. Please clarify for me. Thanks.

It’s interesting to learn about how hemp seeds can help dogs. I was always one of those owners who just gives them treats from the store. However, now I will pay more attention to what sorts of treats I give my little pooch!

Thank you for this recipe! Hemp is such a wholesome plant in so many different ways! I love this recipe! I am a do it yourself kind of girl and its very important to me that I know exactly what Im feeding my dog. I read somewhere the other day that if your dog never eats store bought dog food it can live many years longer! My dog is getting old and I want her to have the best that I can offer her. We get so little time with our pets.

Can I substitute the flour for quinoa ?
I processed the quinoa It into a flour form ?
Just wondering if that would work ?
