Cinco de Mayo is this weekend and today’s DIY flower piñata will add a fun pop of color to your celebration! I fell in love with the idea of making a piñata full of flowers for the holiday, and was surprised by how easy this was to make. It adds such a fun, unexpected touch when you break open the piñata and colorful flowers come tumbling out!
What you need:
A balloon
Newspaper or a magazine to rip into strips (I used an old Free People catalog!)
Cornstarch and water to make paste (you can also use flour in place of cornstarch)
Mod Podge
Tissue paper
Flowers
Start by making the paste that you’ll use to apply the strips of paper to the balloon. This is just like paper mache! Mix a ratio of one part cornstarch with four parts water and stir until there are no lumps in the paste.
Dip the strips of paper into the paste and apply onto a fully-inflated balloon. Continue this process until you’ve completely covered the balloon.
It’s a bit messy, so I recommend working over some newspaper!
A Free People balloon :). Once I was finished covering the balloon with the paper strips, I added a coat of Mod Podge just to be sure that the piñata structure would hold up after I popped the balloon.
Hang your balloon and let it dry over night.
The next morning it’s time to pop the balloon! Use a safety pin and slowly let the air drain out. The paper casing might dent slightly as the air comes out but I was able to mold it right back into shape.
To make the piñata prettier, I covered it with pieces of tissue paper. I cut the tissue paper into small rectangles and glued them onto the piñata, alternating colors with each row.
Fill the piñata through the opening at the top — you can cut the hole so that it is larger if necessary.
I made small cuts with scissors to get the fringe effect on the tissue paper.
We hung the piñata in a tree outside and couldn’t wait to crack it open!
Flowers everywhere!

i absolutely love the idea of putting flowers inside instead of candy! I remember making paper mache pinatas like this in elementary school on several occasions. I think I’m gonna have to give it another try this weekend!
Beautiful!! I love it!!

Interesting and looks easy thanks. http://www.learnhowtoknitascarf.com
Respectfully, this is an ugly example of a beautiful tradition. It doesn’t take much effort to come up with a nice exterior. You can start with a bit more equal size petals, scallops, fringe-like cuts into the paper. It doesn’t need to be perfect, simply a bit more thought into a cool project that brings smiles to those celebrating.
I think it’s super cute! Thank you; I am making a General Grievous pinata for my son and I was afraid to pop the balloon. I like the mod podge idea!
Love this! I’m going to make it with my Spanish class this week. How did you hang it?
