Inside Our Fashion Director’s Home

Our Fashion Director is one of those ladies that inspires from her incredible eye, to her taste, to the way she styles herself and the wise words she speaks. She’s one of those ladies that you just want to sit down and chat with and get her opinion on almost everything in life. When we got an opportunity to visit her home we knew for sure it was going to be a home full of natural beauty, bright spirits and, of course, amazing clothes. The place seemed like something from a novel; something that should be documented fully for a home magazine — it was too perfect… we left feeling overwhelmed, thinking, “How can one place be so perfect?!” Take a look.

Tell us a little about your home.

This house was built in the early 1800’s. It was the part of a huge farm that stretched miles in each direction. We own a beautiful 6.5 acre lot of land that includes a massive barn, a tiny stone house, and a tinier carriage house. We use the barn to house our animals (2 goats, 2 sheep, 26 chickens), my husband’s motorcycle collection & shop, and our storage. The little carriage house is my yoga studio. And the stone house is our family’s home with 1 bathroom and a mini kitchen. It’s so cozy. The scale of it makes it very easy to tidy up!

How long have you been living there?

We moved in five months ago today! We downsized in house and up-sized in land when we decided to make a huge move to the country. We have a little stream on the property and a hill along the front of the house. The day after we moved in it snowed enough for the girls to go sledding right at their own house… we felt that mother nature was giving us a housewarming gift!

What’s your favorite space in your home?

The open kitchen, living room, dining room is where we spend so much of our family time so I think it has to be there… but the view out of my yoga studio window at dawn is mind-boggling beautiful so it’s a toss up.

What inspires the décor?

The house itself. It has huge 12-18″ wood plank floors, plaster walls, a massive walk-in fireplace, and a refined sort of South-of-France-feeling kitchen and bathroom. So I wanted to keep it simple using mostly white décor throughout, with pops of bright pink for fun and in the girls’ room. I like bringing in flowers from the garden and filling the vases for color, too. I’ve also collected little handicrafts from all over the world on my work travels, so I love seeing bits of the world throughout our home. It has to be very functional and it was fun to edit down to our favorite things when we moved into a smaller home.

You have a beautiful closet, what are some of your most prized possessions?

That’s very hard to say because I’m a little bit of a recovering clothes addict… I have big boxes full of past prized possessions in the barn. I have a collection of white Victorian dresses and blouses and underpinnings that I LOVE, a few favorite pairs of old Levis, some lovely Indian-printed cotton batiste dresses, and some beautiful Free People items that I’ve lived in over the years. I am so lucky to have two daughters to pass everything on to when they grow up. Each of them has already picked out some of the things they want to wear when they get big enough.

And lastly, can you describe your home in 2 words?

Tiny and lovely.

I was so excited to see this house! Especially the yoga studio but you hardly have any pictures of the house, just close ups of her and her clothes.

I love it, but I go crazy in the country for too long, I am too much of a city person! Living like this family though would be heaven for my husband.. opposites attract I guess :o) We now live in a suburb, too far from the city for me, too close for him, but we are happy. Our house is wonderful, eclectic, messy and chaotic, full of life, children, Indian textiles, books, fairy lights, Moroccan lanterns, Indigenous Australian art, incense burning everywhere, lots of toys on the floor, etc… Far from perfect but very happy :o)

PS. The embroidered slippers!! Love them!! I bought many pairs of Indian slippers from an antique shop in Little India, Singapore, they are so beautiful.
