Devendra Banhart Live At Union Transfer

I remember when I was first introduced to Devendra… It was during my university days. My best friend and I stalked a band on Myspace and went to see them when they played at a small venue in Bristol. After the show we had a few drinks with the members and — as you’d expect when you socialize with a band — music was the number one subject. They told us to listen to Devendra Banhart and so we did… and we fell in love.

We were hooked on his crazy lyrics, weird words and stories that made no sense to us — but somehow still did, if you know what I mean. We just had to let our imagination run wild and go with it. We jumped on the Devendra train and couldn’t get off for months and months. We finally saw him perform live in London. His weird, exotic bird noises and kooky presence came very much alive and we loved every minute of it. When I heard he was preforming at Union Transfer here in Philly Monday night, I had to go. It was a great show — he mixed old songs with some new ones from his latest album Mala. He has pulled back a lot since the days I last saw him live. He’s tamed that freak-folk and has brought a little pop/rock into the mix. There was a lot of genre-hopping, but overall this show was exceptionally good and has not tainted my love of him in the slightest.

I love Devendra – it would be a dream to see him live! I caught Edward Sharpe at Latitude and imagine their on-stage presence would be quite similar. Check out some of my music recs: http://worthwakingupfor.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/music-to-my-ears.html

Just saw him last weekend at Sixth and I synagogue in DC. First time at that venue (which is incredibly romantic and magnificent) and my first time basking in all that is Devendra. Best night I have had since the weathers turned warm. Great artist to feature.

I saw him last month and it was amazing! I am so blown away by artists who are such great performers that they sound better live. Loved every minute of it.

Looks good and I think it is a good place to listen to the music alone.
