Life begins with the inhalation of our very first breath and ends with the exhalation of our last. Breathing is essential to life, and because it comes so naturally to each one of us, many of us tend not to think about the breaths we take – but we should.
There’s a proper way to breathe, and it offers so many benefits. Breathing properly allows us to feel light and free. Our thoughts become clearer, our minds become calmer, and overall we just feel happier. Proper breathing also boosts immunity to infections and illnesses. It strengthens the heart and lungs, improves the nervous system, and aids both digestion and weight control.
When we become stressed, anxious, or are in a hurry, our breaths tend to be shallow and quick. Because breathing supplies the body with oxygen, it is so important that we breathe deeply to allow ourselves to get enough of it.
Be mindful of your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Breathe slowly and deeply. The slower and deeper the breathing, the longer the span of life.
I have recently been taking note of my breathing, and have found myself breathing through my mouth only – and at a pace that is much too fast. When I slow down my breathing and focus on doing so in through my nose and out through my mouth, I instantly become calmer. The whole time I’ve been writing this post, I’ve also been focusing on my breathing. I feel so relaxed right now, it’s incredible.
Become mindful of your breathing – especially during times of physical or emotional pain. If you catch yourself breathing quickly, slow it down. Once you begin paying attention to each breath, proper breathing will become second nature, and more and more you’ll find yourself living in the now. Always keep in mind that every breath is a gift — and every long, deep breath is a gift that will continue to give.
