3 Hot Toddy Recipes

UPDATE: This post originally ran on September 19, 2013, but the recent onset of winter has had us really craving a delicious toddy… and these are perfect to make for any guests that may be staying with you for the holidays!

Every so often it’s nice to spend the afternoon relaxing with friends, unwinding with a delicious glass of wine or beer. But when the weather starts to drop, I always find myself wanting something warm – and a hot toddy does just the trick. This cold-weather beverage is served hot and is bursting with the flavorful spices that come hand-in-hand with the season. Today I have not one but three hot toddy recipes: one classic, one non-alcoholic, and one a bit on the unique side – all equally delicious.

1. The Perfect Hot Toddy

This is the original hot toddy that we all know and love. To be sure I had this recipe down pat, I turned to Brendan, one of the expert bartenders at a favorite Philadelphia bar and restaurant – Standard Tap.

Hot toddy ingredients 2

Ingredients:
1 ¼ oz whiskey
1 cup boiling water
1-2 tbsp honey
3 lemon wedges
8-10 whole cloves

Brendan’s directions:

“Add 1 ¼ oz of whiskey and a nice gloppy amount of honey into a glass or mug. Squeeze a few lemon wedges and then pour boiling water on it, then mix to dissolve. Take a lemon wedge and fill each lemony section with a clove, poking it in pointy side first. It looks pretty and spices up the toddy nicely.”

2. The Not Toddy

For any of you who don’t drink alcohol, dislike whiskey, or just want something flavorful to sip all day long, this recipe is for you! It may be more of a glorified cup of tea than a hot toddy, but I love it just the same.

Non-alcoholic Hot Toddy

Ingredients:
6 oz hot tea
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp lemon juice
2-3 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp ground or whole cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 lemon wedge

Directions:

First pour the honey, lemon, and spices into a glass or mug. Top with hot tea, stir, and add a lemon wedge for garnish.

3. The Hot Apple-Ginger Toddy

This recipe is slightly more involved, as you must first ginger-infuse your apple cider, but it’s not difficult! I love it because the apple cider adds to the beautiful autumnal aroma, while the ginger soothes the stomach.

Hot toddy ingredients

Ingredients:
6 oz ginger-infused apple cider
1 slice fresh ginger
1 tsp honey
2 oz whiskey
1 slice lemon

Directions:

To infuse your apple cider, first, peel and chop several slices of ginger. Bring 6-8 ounces of apple cider to a boil in a nonaluminum pot. Once the cider boils, add in ginger. Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes. Puree your mixture in a blender and strain using a cheesecloth.

To make the toddy, add the whiskey to your ginger-infused cider while the cider is still hot. Stir in honey. Pour into a glass or mug, and garnish with lemon and ginger slice.

Mmmmm, hot toddy season is here! A good toddy with local bourbon is a favorite in Lexington. :) I love the ginger and apple idea!

I made myself one (or two, haha) of these yesterday to ward off my cold. It was way more delicious and soothing than Theraflu, and didn’t give me the hangover that Nyquil gives me! Thanks for the apple & ginger recipe – I still need to use up the rest of my whiskey!

You’re not fooling anyone with that Martha Stewart hipster glass flask of bourbon. You have a problem – a serious problem. We love you and we’re here to help.

Here’s my favorite recipe for a Spicy Ginger Hot Toddy:

Ginger Ale
Honey
Juice from 1 lemon
Cinnamon-flavored whiskey

Combine first 3 ingredients to taste and heat in pot or microwave. Add whiskey. Dee-lish!

YUM! Any excuse to drink whiskey is a valid one, in my opinion, but man, it sure does take the edge off cold weather.

Happy Holidays, and thanks for all the info you’ve shared this year! Looking forward to a great 2014 for us all!

I love a nice hot toddy but I never use my nice scotch whiskey for it because that is a waste :) So if anyone knows a good but not super expensive whiskey that they use post it.
