Fresh Fig & Banana Smoothie (Gluten-Free & Vegan)

This post is part of our restricted diet series from Beth of Tasty Yummies.

It is officially fig season and I love it!  We have a huge black mission fig tree here in the yard of our new home in Southern California and I am being bombarded with beautiful fresh figs every day.  I think making a fig smoothie might just be the best idea I have some up with yet to enjoy them.  A great way to enjoy a few fresh from the tree now while they are in season and it will be a really nice way to use some of the frozen ones later, after the season is long gone and over.  This smoothie is creamy and so perfectly sweet, without needing any sweetener at all. You could add some spices like cinnamon or cardamom if you wish, but I really wanted to fully enjoy the delicious but mild fig flavor.

Makes 1 large or 2 small servings

3-4 fresh figs, washed and stems removed the halved (I used black mission)*

1 frozen banana

1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk (or other non-dairy milk)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds, optional

Handful of ice

Directions:

Add all of the ingredients to your blender, blend until smooth and creamy.  Serve immediately!

*This recipe works great with frozen fresh figs as well.

I just tried a variation of this… it was wonderful! I am not on a restricted diet in any way, I just love good foods. (this could, however, work for those who are restricted by dairy or vegan) I had 4 of the brown figs and one banana chopped.. I added a dash of vanilla and used coconut milk because I am obsessed with it! I had some left over since I love to cook with it often. I am not particularly inclined towards flax seeds, and don’t have that ingredient, but if that’s something you are into the texture would work with the seeds in the figs.
For practicality I use a small immersion blender because it’s easy to clean and I can blend it right in the cup. It doesn’t blend ice well, so added some water to the mix and put cubes in to cool my smoothie.

Figs are my absolute favorite! And they’re so photogenic, too!

ohgoodgolly this looks superdelicious! I love figs in any form but I do have a weakness for Sicilian fig filled cookies like my grandma used to make (but veganized). And vegan fig pop tarts. :)
Thanks for the recipe!

One smoothie ‘ll be trying is figs dates and banana with a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg, flax-seeds and oats blended together with unsweetened oat milk for an exotic breakfast! Thanks for the inspiration.
