Introducing Our Vintage Denim Collection

We’re so excited about the beautiful collection of vintage denim that we’ve just launched on our site. Each piece in this collection has been carefully selected by our in-house vintage buyer Ali, who searched the US from east to west, from personal archives to large flea markets, hand-picking each item as she went. I caught up with her to find out more about the collection and to gain some knowledge about vintage denim.

Ali is very proud to have curated such a unique collection for Free People. “I like to think that this is one of the strongest vintage denim collections for sale in the country as we speak,” she said. It’s filled with cool, rare, one-of-a-kind styles – about 150 pieces in total. You’ll find pieces from big names like Levis and Lee right alongside styles from lesser-known brands with cool fits and washes — from as far back as the early 1900s all the way to the 1980s. Overalls were a big focus for this collection, as they’re huge this season, and paint-splatter jeans were a big idea, as well. You’ll also find rare pleated jackets from the 40s, amazing denim aprons, and even a denim umbrella! What really sticks out about the collection is that it’s not really about your everyday jean. The idea is to accessorize your usual outfit with unique denim pops.

Ali has a great collection of books about vintage denim which have helped to contribute to her extensive knowledge on the subject. Thumbing through a couple of them, what I found the most interesting was discovering how to determine the age of a piece based elements like stitches, pleats, and labels, based on knowledge of that particular brand.

Vintage Denim Books

As you may expect, Ali’s home is filled to the brim with unique vintage treasures – including lots of denim — that are carefully displayed throughout. Here’s a little glimpse:

Denim overalls

Denim Hat

Denim doll

Finally, I wanted to leave you with Ali’s top 4 picks of the collection!

I’m pretty shocked by the prices, too be honest. I thought they were high before, but your prices have skyrocketed! I get that these are unique items and carefully selected ones at that. But even if you include that, and the materials in the price, it still seems very steep to me.. Maybe Free People has their reasons, but I still think it’s a shame.

I’m another one shocked by the prices. It might be helpful to explain to your customers in detail how pricing is determined for such pieces as the $328 turquoise suede cuff. I am unable to understand how a simple leather cuff with peeling paint inscribed with “J.G.” gets priced at $328. Where was the piece found? How old does the buyer think it is? Is “J.G.” an artist or craftsperson of note? Does the piece have a unique or noteworthy provenance? I think some kind of explanation/justification is needed if you’re going to charge such prices.

$128 vintage laundry bag… I cannot afford your clothes anymore … :(

I agree with Another one. Maybe an explanation on how pricing is determined on the vintage loves page. So many of these items I can find for 50 bucks in a thrift shop or online at sites like ebay (with a bit of luck that is). I think a lot of the time I would favor Free People, but I just can’t afford it. So Free People has become my go-to for inspiration, unfortunately it ends with that.
Really don’t get me wrong; Most of the Free People clothes, although I think they are pricey, I do get that they are beautifull often handcrafted and unique items, but these new prices for second hand items just shocked me.

I agree with the others. They all speak what I feel about the pricing. It is too bad.

What a shame.
