Plant Shop I Love: City Planter

It’s rare that you go inside to get a breath of fresh air, but that’s exactly my intention when I go to City Planter. A little shop not far from where I live in Philly, City Planter is a breath of fresh air. Exposed brick walls with high ceilings create an open space that’s flooded with sunlight from the skylights overhead. Plants climb down the walls from high places and fill every crevice along the walls. It feels fresh. There’s a light, positive vibe about this shop that just makes me smile every time I’m there. On this particular visit, they had just received a huge shipment of 1,000 plants — and this isn’t a big shop. The place was overflowing with green beauty.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to chat with Peter and Julie (the store owner and one of his very sweet employees), who shared some very valuable information. Without further ado, here are 6 low-light plants:

This knowledge is especially valuable for those of us who live in not-so-greatly lit apartments in the city. You shouldn’t have a problem finding these at a plant store near you, so if you live in a low-light environment and are looking to bring some green into your life, write these down!

Julie also shared an interesting tip that I’d never thought of before: Use fancy tools. It’s always really fun to use tools that look pretty, like these plant misters below. The best part about it, though, is that doing so will probably get you to take better care of your plants — albeit unknowingly!

If you’re in the Philly area, stop by City Planter. If you’re not, find a local plant shop by you and venture inside for a breath of fresh air.
