Jessica Oliva -December 23, 2013, 11:41AM

In the year of 2012 a vowed to give myself the gift of altruism and solemnly swore to be kind to everyone no matter how much it hurt. I promised that I would make 2012 a year to give love and not let the grudges get to me. Just to let go of hate. That year was an amazing, eye opening adventure and I truly did love myself a lot more at the end of 2012. Although I opened my heart up tremendously, I did see a cycle behind my blinded love eyes of men, and some women, abusing my love. With your heart and hate on a balance beam, I chosen to look past the loving abuse. In 2013, I vowed that I would give my self, my love, more attention than I was giving people in the past. Throughout 2013…I’ve done that. I’ve stayed single and enjoyed the love I was allowing myself to have but I felt something missing. I can only guess it was my lack of loving I was out pouring to others like I had done religiously the previous year. In 2014, I’m going into a new year with a partner that I’m still not completely sure about. This year I want to incorporate my altruism and love for myself but mostly I want to make a list of multiple personal goals rather than a characteristic change. I want to learn to play the guitar, eventually play in a local coffee shop in Dallas, and eventually become a yoga teacher. That’s doable, right?

marissa -December 23, 2013, 11:43AM

Michaela -December 23, 2013, 11:52AM

My new years resolution is to find and maintain balance. Over this past year, I have managed to take control of my anxiety and it has truly changed my life and the way I function. However, without all that help, their are some things I need to do myself in order to fully maintain a fulfilled life. My goal when I say finding balance is to not overdo my schedule, find who I am, and balance the expectations in my head.

georgia -December 23, 2013, 11:53AM

my new year’s resolution is to go for it; go for anything. If i like a guy, i will make the first move. I will not care about how badly I paint, I’ll just paint because it’s fun. I will go on hikes in Oregon during break because I want to. I’ll sit down in the middle of the woods to write poetry. I want to be able to do something everyday that means something, even if its just spending a few minutes sketching in my notebook or taking time to read my favourite book. I want to do everything with confidence. I want to be able to wear weird pants and not care. So that’s why my new year’s resolution is to go for it. It means that I should just do things because I want to and not care what others will think of me. I should do things that I love to do without judgement. I’ll be able to really be myself.

I have a tendency to either focus too much on the past or look too much into what is coming up next that I do not get the chance to “stop and smell the roses” and truly appreciate the beautiful things that are happening as they happen. I believe that if I can learn to do this I will be a much happier and more at peace with myself.

Zoe -December 23, 2013, 1:14PM

My new years resolution is to live a healthier lifestyle that is in touch with nature. I love living green, but with school I sometimes find it challenging and just go off the bandwagon, so, this year I resolve to not be lazy with this!

Ava -December 23, 2013, 1:14PM

For 2014, I resolve to take an hour out of each day to do something that makes me happy. For me, that means taking an hour wherever I am, to take a few shots with my 35mm.

Savanah Alvarez -December 23, 2013, 1:24PM

My New Years resolution is to get rid of all the negativity in my life by becoming a better me in a more positive way. I have started by eating a healthier diet and being more active. I also am going to live life to the fullest and “just ride” in a sense so that everyday i have an amazing story to tell. I also am going to redecorate my dorm to become a more positive space for me to come home to. I have gotten so inspired by the free people blog to help me live my life so much happier.

April F. -December 23, 2013, 1:25PM

My resolution is to just BE. Everyday, everyone tells me what to do, what not to do, when to do it, how to do it. They put me down and tear me apart, and expect me to just stand there and take it with a smile on my face. Everything that I’ve ever loved or liked to do, I’m no good at… so I’m told. After years of this, I’m empty, I’m hollow, I’m barely a shell of my former self. All I want is to breathe and BE.

Hanna -December 23, 2013, 1:29PM

My New Years’ resolution is to continue my inner adventure with being happy with what I have and wanting less. After years of depression and episodes of pessimism, I recently discovered that sometimes, the secret to happiness is looking at what you have around you and learning to love it. This mindset is most certainly helping and I’m hoping to find myself and my true place more in the new year.

I’m the kind of person who always lives in the future- asking myself where I’m going next, how I can improve this or that, etc. A close friend was diagnosed with cancer recently (staying positive!!). This was a huge shock that made me realize how suddenly everything can change, and how important it is to stay in the moment. I don’t want to regret not forgiving someone or not spending enough time with someone I love. So! While I’m still working towards my goals and striving to grow, I’m also making sure to take time to appreciate the goodness I have in my life now.

I am also going to set my dreams of traveling to Bali to receive my yoga certification in motion this year, and applying for a FreePeople Internship that I have wanted to do for so long.

my new years resolution is to be a better person, in every sense of the word. i’ve spent so much of my life focusing on concrete, career driven goals, that have been selfish at times, and am now finally realizing, that before i can achieve anything great, i need to be a decent, happy human being. so i’m going to take this year and take care of myself, my body, my mind, my soul. i’m going to stop seeing only myself, and try to give something back to others, by being more attentive to the needs of my family and friends, and by helping those who need it through volunteer endeavours. i’ve already signed up with a volunteer organization and plan to spend my next year (once i finish school) traveling to and helping impoverished regions around the world. i’m really looking forward to the experiences the year can offer and am ready to become a better person.

I have allowed myself to be stuck in the past and beat myself up for ridiculous things for so long I just want to let everything go. I also want to take better care of myself, and get in better health. And to appreciate all the little things and stuff that most people un-knowingly take for granted. I want to get a job and save up so I can go to cosmetology school. And maybe start a small etsy or something on the side and make beautiful things I love and put all of my heart and soul into them. And wake up smiling every morning, just happy to see another day. But most importantly I want to learn to love myself for every part of me, good or bad and finally be just be me. Happy Holidays. xx

My New Year’s resolution for 2014: At my old age ;-) I find resolutions harder to come by…yes I could say get more fit, however I trek across the New Mexico high desert, help with wood cutting, lots of just working out without “the video, or going to the gym” for me represent something that I plan on changing for a life-time, not a month, not until I get bored…or it really never fit “my lifestyle”. So, I think my New Year’s resolution is to live with less…and to be appreciative for what I have, not to get caught up in life’s material world.

My New Years resolution is to do what i love, not what i think i am supposed to do.
As a student, it’s a constant battle trying to make life changing decisions on what you love vs. what [society says] is good for you. But in the end, a good paying job won’t satisfy. Money won’t satisfy. But doing what you love, changing the world, loving people, and being a free spirit will do more than satisfy.

I will not feel sorry for myself. I found out this year that I have MS. And I’ve just had a major back surgery rebuilding the whole lower half of my back. I vow to look forward to each day and treasure all the things in life I’ve always loved. Now is time for a new and different life. New miracles. New memories. New friends. Happiness, and love.

My New Year’s resolution is to feel comfortable in my own skin. In the immortal words of Beyoncé, “Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts”. Striving to look or be perfect is impossible, you just end up hurting yourself in the process. Instead, I’m just going to work on feeling comfortable with myself, which will make me happier than anything else.

Alissa -December 23, 2013, 10:18PM

I desire to spend my time differently – with purpose, even if that means to do nothing for the sake of relaxation. I want to build my relationship with God and focus on, perhaps even discover, my true reasoning of life – say it even merely be to brighten the day of people near me and broaden the giving of love. I want to give my time to others, I want to give them smiles and laughter. I hope to strengthen my health, both physically and mentally, and I hope to strengthen my creativity, through writing and the stroke of my hand. It’s quite a bit, yes, but I do have a whole wonderful year ahead of me, do I not?

Michelle C -December 23, 2013, 10:18PM

my new year resolution is to have a whole new wardrobe of clothes consisting of chic and serene styles

Lauren -December 23, 2013, 10:24PM

To pray.
For me this manifests itself in poetry. I read a Hadot essay earlier in the fall semester that argued that the most effective spiritual exercises are those you lose yourself in. Eternally a non-traditionalist, it is only fitting that I am most at peace and separated from my ego when I am writing personal reflections. So it goes.

For the majority of my adolescence, I have struggled with my attempts to identify what exactly it was I was praying to (or rather, WASN’T praying to). Ever since I began university, I have found myself slowly coming back to a divine. I seek to know it. I seek to journey towards it. I am eager and hungry to be humbled by whatever path it leads me on.

Peka -December 23, 2013, 10:26PM

My resolution is to… Drink More Tea! :) I really need to get away from energy drinks and let my body reset… Plus a cup of chai is my happy place.

My New Year’s resolution is to make art out of everything. Art doesn’t just have to be physically making things. It can be the way you look at things, too. I want my life to be as creative and inspiring as possible. Art can be the way I get ready in the morning, the way I communicate with others and even myself, the way I view things that happen to me. I am an artist and I want to bring the same feelings of harmony from when I am creating to every day aspects of my life.

sam -December 23, 2013, 11:12PM

My New Years Resolution is more of a promise to myself than anything, because it was something I was planning to do regardless the time of the year. It’s to live a more active and healthy lifestyle (yes, the usual :working out” Resolution). KC -December 24, 2013, 12:16AM

My resolution is to enjoy everyday to the fullest and document it in an art journal…I realize it is all to easy to get caught up in life and miss the little things or time you could have spent with others and you will never get that back. Time is a precious gift that we waste all too much and easily.

Chloe -December 24, 2013, 12:26AM

To not care what anyone else thinks and just do me!

Alex Deanne -December 24, 2013, 12:27AM

In 2014 I’d really like to return to my spiritual roots– I want to return to a healthier way, and more holistic way, of living. I’ve sort of grown out of my healthy routine, looking more for convenience in my very work-infused, busy days. I want to focus on the inner me and bring myself back to a mindful state of being.

My New Year’s Resolution is to give my best in all areas of my life. All or nothing.

Valerie -December 24, 2013, 2:06AM

I don’t usually make a New Year’s resolution.. ever. I am a routine goal setter and I’ve never truly embraced the freshness of the New Year as a holiday and time for change. Recently, however, I’ve been feeling that although my life is good and I’m loving who I’m becoming and I am proud of myself… I can be better. So I suppose that’s my New Year’s resolution– to become a better me. That may seem vague to you, strangers and blog readers and lovely free people.. but for me this includes several tangible, realistic, measurable things: Breaking my bad habit of biting my nails and no longer using profanity.
Drinking more water everyday and no longer drinking soda.
Doing yoga every morning for a minimum of fifteen minutes (focusing on my breaths this year!) and hulahooping to at least two songs each day.
Utilizing the free rock climbing facilities at my university’s gym at least twice a week.
Eating out only twice a month.
Discovering a form of meditation that speaks to me.

All of these things and a few more personal, attainable goals will help me accomplish my New Year’s resolution of becoming a better me! I am confident that I will.

All of my love and motivational energies to all of you!! May this coming year be one of beauty and self-discovery for all. MUAH

Michelle -December 24, 2013, 2:07AM

I aspire to become a stronger person. Instead of mulling over little trivial events that really only prevent me from seeing the bigger picture in life, I want to be able to perceive things with a positive manner and look for the good. I also want to gain self-confidence in myself and find a voice inside me that will speak up when I feel strongly about something and stop worrying about what others are thinking of me. Lastly, I want to better exert self-control and live life in a balanced equation, not over-indulging nor restricting myself. These are my New Year’s resolutions!

Kylie Rose -December 24, 2013, 2:07AM

My New Years resolution is to stay on this fabulous track that 2013 has put me on. I have learned so much and want to continue to learn and to also let loose all of the time, because although it truly is the longest thing you do, life is short and there’s plenty of room for more mistakes and greater knowledge. I’ve lost my job and started fresh somewhere else, I’ve moved again this year, and have found love. So yeah, 2014, I’m going to keep doing me. I can’t promise the petty things, like quitting smoking or exercising for once, but I can promise to stay true to me.

Kendall Reynolds -December 24, 2013, 2:07AM

My New Year’s Resolution is to begin working on myself and who I want to be, rather than what I need to be for other people

Kristina Mendez -December 24, 2013, 2:07AM

To revere the present as much as I dream of the future.

Samantha -December 24, 2013, 2:12AM

To focus on the positive, be gentle with myself, and bake more vegan gluten-free cookies.

Pia -December 24, 2013, 2:19AM

To love more. Love my family more. Love my friends more. Love my work more. Love strangers more. Love myself more

Alex -December 24, 2013, 2:31AM

To live my life to the fullest. Also, to actually stick to my resolutions this year. Some more are to just be a healthy person: diet, and excerise should become habit, and to laugh more and not take life as seriously.

Alyssa -December 24, 2013, 2:40AM

my new year’s resolution is to focus on my happiness and health! i’m hoping to keep with my goal of practicing yoga at least once a day, cherish the time spent with friends, and make sure i give my all in everything i do. i will also be studying abroad in Germany for 3 weeks this summer, so I hope to live everyday abroad to its full potential. no stone will be left unturned!!!

Elise -December 24, 2013, 2:41AM

My New Year’s Resolution is to be more healthy and productive. I plan on writing more, working harder, eating better and exercising more often. I also feel like being more healthy isn’t just about being physically healthy, but mentally healthy, so I plan on spending more time with people that make me happy and less time with people that make me unhappy. The new year calls for change. :)

Maddy -December 24, 2013, 2:47AM

My resolution not only begins with actually sticking to it, but it includes my hopes for recreating my lifestyle to one I truly enjoy, free of bad energy and toxic things, whatever those may be. I hope to spread my happiness and smile onto others, and really enjoy living in the moment rather than thinking about what I have to do next. My resolution also includes my hopes of successful and safe travel, work, and helping others in my life and community. I do not necessarily want to change myself much as a person, but rather improve on things I can while adopting the new habits I have been wanting to implement into my daily life.

Casey -December 24, 2013, 2:48AM

My New Years resolution will be to go outside as much as possible— there are few things in life better than fresh air!!!~

Ellen -December 24, 2013, 3:02AM

To become a vegetation!
I’ve wanted to commit for a while and now I feel I can finally do it with the motivation to eat more consciously and save more animal’s lives! All animals deserve the right to live in their natural habitat and not in some cage.

Happy Holidays ❅

Erin -December 24, 2013, 5:29AM

My New Year’s resolution is to live more freely. To embrace my creativity: paint more, write more songs & poetry. I want to do thoughtful things for others just because and not worry about the time it may take from some of my responsibilities. I want to travel at a whim, have new adventures. I want to explore new music and burn a soundtrack cd that reminds me of the year I finally just “let go” & lived my life for the moment. (I’ve always lived a very structured life and tended to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders. I’ve worked two jobs since I was 13, always feeling the need to be responsible and prepared. I like that it enabled me to take care of people I love but somewhere along the way, around 23, I forgot the things that made me, “me”. I stopped breaking into song and dance in the middle of public for no reason other than I felt the need to. I didn’t draw or paint very often. I stopped taking random voyages to see friends who lived far away when I had time off. I started worrying too much about home repairs, keeping up with this or that, saving every penny, taking on way too much responsibility at once. I stopped allowing myself to have much fun at all really. 4 years of that and I felt nothing more accomplished, I felt exhausted. I lost my job this past summer and broke into my savings so that my husband and I could go to Montana for his brother’s wedding. Something in me snapped while we were there…but in a very good way. I simply allowed myself to give in to the moment, to simply not care. It’s the first I’ve felt a true fresh breath of air in years! We went to a music festival, made pottery at an artisan booth, I painted pictures of the sun setting over the mountains, and got WAY TOO CLOSE to a buffalo. It made me feel so alive…so in touch with my inner child and yet somehow as though I was rediscovering myself, finding who I was meant to truly be. It also helped rekindle something between my husband and I. We’d been engaged for years and always postponed our wedding for finances, others’ needs, life in general, whatever. We accidentally let trivial things get in the way. When we got back from Montana, we made our own invitations & threw a wedding together in just over a month, with as little stress and planning as possible. We vowed to just let things happen how they were meant to. I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding! I don’t know that it could have happened if I hadn’t embraced the whole new attitude of just living for the moment.) I can’t wait to keep taking steps upon the path of finding joy in the small things and letting things happen as they may! It’s so exciting and so unimaginatively liberating! This will be the first year in a long time I’m looking forward to the coming year with no stress, no expectations, no planning…just looking forward to embracing life!

Bee -December 24, 2013, 5:34AM

My New Year’s resolutions have a lot to do with my conversion to Buddhism over this year. I want to get more serious about meditation, yoga, incorporating zen rituals into my life, and learning more about the history, sects, and cultural Buddhist practices. I also want to figure out a way to balance my love for clothing, jewelry, and other material possessions with the aceticism that is central to all Buddhist doctrine.

I’d also like to sew more projects and down more DIY crafts!

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Yessica -December 24, 2013, 9:41AM

My resolution for New Year is live each day like it would be the last. Enjoy little things, moments that make me happy. Learn more and more …read more…do more natural crafts…sew more. I want to to have a store and sell my chothing, accesories, journals, natural crafts, and also that the place have an area to play live music..seating area to share, art gallery nights…DIY projects, meetings to converse about books or social issues and serving natural homemade goodies and tea, join people to plan and do things to help environment and help people in need…etc etc.. It is a dream that I have but this new year I will work hard to achieve it! Also, I want to love more, and meet new people, new places… And the more important to continue doing the best for my daugther, my little princess! She is a special little girl and I will continue to search the more help possible about her health and enjoy quality time with her to see always her beautiful smile! : ) Happy holidays to everyone!!!

Amy -December 24, 2013, 9:46AM

To love others more, do more to let friends and family know they are appreciated — simple notes, cards, a thank you, and more phone calls. Be more creative, work harder and extend my yoga practice. Be thankful for everyday — the good and bad.

Claire -December 24, 2013, 10:02AM

My New Year’s resolution is to eat a really healthy diet because there are so many benefits to make you look and feel better. I also want to try a ton of different things and finally get my look together. I wanna be seen a little bit differently by everyone.

kayleigh -December 24, 2013, 10:27AM

my main new year’s resolution is to eat well, exercise, and take care of my mind. this past year, though it wasn’t bad, has left my mind absolutely fried. i am going into christmas with much less peace of mind and irritation that won’t go away. i haven’t been doing yoga, my eating habits have become pretty bad, and the only exercise i’m getting is walking to where i need to go. i just haven’t been able to stop and smell the roses and realize how great life is. in 2014, i’d love to go to more yoga and gym classes, try to cut out eggs and dairy (i already don’t eat meat except fish), and meditate.

Tiffany -December 24, 2013, 10:37AM

My resolution is to focus myself on the things that I find most important. I am in college studying dance and I find myself worrying about little things that frankly, do not matter. I want to refocus on dance, it’s the one thing that has always been consistent in my life, and I want really hone in and find myself once again lost in the movement.

I have always loved New Year’s Eve whether I’m at home alone by the fire watching the ball drop on tele or out with my friends drinking and being merry while waiting for your guy to give you a kiss at the stroke of midnight, when everyone is still in the holiday fever it ends the holiday break with a bang and a laugh. but my favorite part would be the feeling of renewal and freshness when you wake up the next morning, you can be whoever you want and do whatever you choose! it’s a fresh start at life, you just have to say yes.

My new years resolution is empathy. I don’t like to pick one thing I’ll do for a whole year instead I like to choose a theme for the year. Something that can be worked towards in all different ways as I see fit through out the seasons. Next year I plan to focus on connectedness not only with other people but with myself. I plan to be more empathetic (not sympathetic). And focus on building stronger relationships with new and old friends and with myself.

Julia -December 25, 2013, 12:18PM

My new year’s resolution is to find the beautiful moments in even the most monotonous days. To pay attention to the sensations of my five senses and actually listen, smell, see, hear, and touch. The “10 Sweet Little Moments in…” series by Kristen Hedges on your blog inspired me so much, and as I’ve practiced the meditations she suggested, my every day routines have become more interesting and inspiring. I hope to remember these meditations every day this upcoming year, relish in every moment and make it count!

My new years resolution is to guard my tongue.
Our mouths hold so much power. The ability to encourage someone and the power to tear someone down. I want to be a woman of positive voice. Not a woman who manipulates others to get what she wants. I want to make sure what I say about someone only builds them up in confidence and self esteem. I do not want to take the power of my tongue and ruin someone’s self image or talk bad about them. It will be difficult to change at first. But I think it is going to change my reputation for generations if I work hard at committing to it

Olivia Crooker -December 27, 2013, 7:58PM

My New Years Resolution is to become the best person i can be. To truly forgive and forget, to love and to be centre. This past year of 2013 was full of craziness and I need to become more bounded and whole. to start thinking of other more than myself, and to recognize a need from a necessity. I need to be able to give quicker than receiving and to appreciate those little moments. I get so rapped up in technology that I forget what’s actually important. To become a more whole person I feel that I need to start meditating daily and making sure that i get to yoga everyday. those two aspects have helped me some, and with a more regular practice I believe that it could truly make all the crazy aspects of my life more complete and grounded. xx I can’t wait for 2014!

My New Years Resolution is to actively practice and understand that I must first take care of myself in order to successfully care for others. I plan to eat better, be active, craft more and learn to love myself. After a really difficult 2013, I hope that I have learned from my trials and will work toward a happy and healthy 2014.

I’m a junior in HS and i’m new this year at my current school ! This is my 10th school (total) and my 3rd highschool. Moving so much has given me a lot of anxiety and it makes me feel really apprehensive to meet new people. So far, this year has NOT be swell. But my New Year’s Resolution is to stop moping (mopping?) and to just meet new people and to just live ! 2013 was pretty rough, i started a new (other) school my sophomore year and it was way different from my 2012 year. But i overcame a lot of things and learned a lot that year ! I hope to accomplish big things this year too !

My boyfriend and I just moved into a small fixer-upper. My New Year’s resolution is to clean out the back yard and plant a vegetable and herb garden for the Spring. Maintenance on the garden will be challenging, but well worth the reward!

my new year’s resolution is to transform my patterns of fear into courageous opportunities for love. to meditate more so that i don’t become wrapped up in every little detail, but rather embrace the fluctuations of being human. these things will make more space for light – within me, and thus, for every person that i interact with.

L -December 28, 2013, 10:41AM

i have been enjoying Danielle LaPorte’s “The Desire Map”. I mapped my core desired feelings last year and did it again this year. My core desired feelings for 2014 – to be: At Ease, Open, Light and Balanced. Tea is just one of the many things that I enjoy that helps me focus on just being and this package is really awesome.

Lauren -December 28, 2013, 1:56PM

My resolution is to start little, but to make small changes to get the life I’m happy with. From being more grateful, ridding my life of people who don’t add to it, and doing the things I have always wanted to do.

Alina -December 28, 2013, 3:33PM

My resolution for 2014 is to spend more time feeling and less time thinking. I want to work on keeping the past in the past and the future in the future and simply enjoying the simplest of moments in the present. One of my meditation rituals involves sitting in front of my window, clearing my mind and drinking tea without distractions so I obviously went slightly berserk when I noticed your giveaway!

I would like to heal the people around me – make them whole. Maybe travel to new places to heal broken people. To me, helping others from depression or illness is the path to fulfillment. These interactions are the ways to shaping the world and showing society that we are not lost or selfish. I will also, of course, prioritize my well-being. Sleepless nights no more!
Thank you for your consideration!
