Homemade Ginger Ale

UPDATE: This post originally ran on December 17 2013, but we love this homemade recipe so much we had to share it again!

It’s funny, but I most definitely swear by ginger ale. If I have a cold…stomach ache…headache….any other kind of ache…or if I just need a nice refreshing beverage…ginger ale cures it all for me. Who knows…it could just be a mental thing, but I instantly feel better after having a cold glass of ginger ale. It’s crisp and delicious, and I can drink it at any hour of the day. I was so excited when I found a homemade recipe that I had to try it out. If you are a ginger ale fan, no doubt you are going to love this.

ginger ale supplies

What you need:

1 cup fresh ginger, peeled and sliced

1 cup sugar

2 cups water

club soda

lemon and lime juice

mint

ginger syrup boiling

First, peel some fresh ginger root and cut it into small slices until you have a cup’s worth. Combine the ginger, sugar and water into a saucepan and simmer for about 10 minutes until the sugar dissolves. Strain the syrup and allow it to cool.

pouring syrup over ice

Fill a glass with ice, and pour over 1 part ginger syrup to 3 parts club soda.

I used about a shot’s worth of the ginger syrup, but you can always add in more to make it more flavorful.

Finish off by squeezing in some lemon and lime juice, and a sprig of mint for garnish. Enjoy!

Whenever I drink ginger ale it makes me think of flying on a plane. I love how natural this recipe is, you could even swap out the sugar with coconut sugar too =) Sounds delish <3

Great post!

I can’t believe how easy this is, and way better than buying the stuff from the store, and a lot cheaper too. I wonder if you could freeze the syrup into ice cubes so it would last longer.

Thanks for the recipe. Tried it for the 1st time & couldn’t believe how tasty it was. I muddled mint in my drink for a Moscow Mule taste.

I’ve make this several times since the original post. It’s absolutely wonderful, I modify slightly by adding a touch of organic vanilla extract (about 1/4 teaspoon).

I also save the candied ginger root. I just toss in a little tubinado sugar and let dry and a rack. Yummy little treat! :)

Has anyone tried this recipe without sugar? Or substituted with coconut sugar? I’m trying to give up sugar and I love ginger ale. Thanks Free People for another great idea!

I had no idea that making ginger-ale was this simple! I typically only drink it when I’m sick but I might have to make an exception for the homemade version. (:

Yummy :) I always turn to ginger ale when I’m carsick or have an upset stomach. The combination of the detox effects of ginger and the bubbles in soda can always make me feel better. Thanks for sharing, next time I have a road trip I’ll make some homemade ginger ale so that I don’t have to turn to the processed stuff.

Thanks for sharing!
