Musical Muses: Women Of SXSW

Most people who attend SXSW (artists included) will agree on one fact: it can be overwhelming. So many shows, so many amazing new artists to check out, and on top of that, so many other events and activities going on.  You spread yourself so thin that it becomes hard to let the things you’re experiencing really sink in.  This year, I feel like we experienced the festival in a different way.  We were fully there, in each moment, living it and loving it.  One of the highlights?  Spending time with some incredibly talented female artists — beautiful souls, inside and out.  Each one so different from the next, bringing their own energy and light to the experience.  At a festival often dominated by male acts, it is so refreshing to spend time with these women who have made their dreams a reality through hard work, talent, and dedication to their craft.  It was an absolute joy spending time with each and every one of you: Alaina, Madi, Lily, Elizabeth, and Kat — thank you for sharing some of your time with us, and thank you for being real.

Alaina Moore, sweet, soft-spoken, and sincere.  She’s a tiny little thing, but when she gets on stage, she’s a musical force to be reckoned with.  We talked about Nashville, and the amazing group of creative people who live there, and the meaning behind her arm tattoos (they’re doodles her husband and bandmate drew for her when they met in school).  She also knows her style and how to put together an awesome look — here she paired the French Garden Overalls with the Mock Me Tank and Belmont Leather Clog.

Madi Diaz is a burst of energy.  All smiles and long legs, laughing, joking, telling stories — within moments of meeting her you feel like she’s one of your best girlfriends you’ve known for years.  She’s a blast to be around, and as she left I was tempted to ask if I could join her and her band on the road — because you know it would be a good time.  As we shot her, she’d talk to the people walking by, pet their dogs, generally just open and loving towards everything around her — the type of person that just makes you feel at ease, at home.  Above she is wearing the Raw Hem Denim Cutoff, We The Free Boxy Crop Stripe Tee, Spot The Homerun Baseball Jacket, In Fashion Pendant, and Trapped Crystal Cuff.

As Madi Diaz was leaving our hotel, Lily Kershaw was arriving on a rickshaw — turns out, these two lovely ladies are on the same label, but hadn’t met yet. They giggled like old friends and posed for a few pictures before Madi took off. The first word that comes to mind for Lily is “fireball” — not because of her red hair, but her spirit.  Outgoing, friendly, easy to talk to, she was another one I could have hung out with all day long.  Girls like her make it easy to forget you’re in the presence of a talented artist, and feel like you’re just among friends. Lily gravitated towards all black, with colorful accessories to balance the look.  She’s wearing the Eyelashes Slip, Classic Biker Jacket, Bound Crystal Suede Mix Pendant, Embellished Band Brimmed Hat, and Dreamweaver Crossbody.

Elizabeth Ziman

Elizabeth Ziman exudes a laid-back coolness.  She seems like the type who would be completely unfazed by things that might cause anxiety in others.  With her casual demeanor and style, she seems completely at ease in her own skin.  No fuss, no frills, she just wants to wear what makes her feel good, natural, comfortable.  At the same time, there is an air of mystery — hints at what lies beneath the surface, but only those close get to see.  Elizabeth went for an easy look in the Leighanna Smocked Pant, Boatneck Seamless Cami, Delicate Long Rosary, Mixed Metals Cuff, and Wide Brim Floppy Felt Hat.

Katrine Ottosen, the Danish beauty behind CALLmeKAT, reminded me of a fairy as she danced around in the lace poncho, skipping and smiling all along.  Her smile lights up the room, and her eyes widen with excitement as she talks.  She’s captivating, much like her voice.  A dream to photograph, as she moves elegantly and gracefully, yet with almost a childlike carefree demeanor that makes you smile without realizing you have a grin from ear to ear.  She wore the Rachel Scallop Lace Poncho, Canyonite Belt, Trapped Crystal Cuff, Multi Strand Caged Bracelet, and Deep V Ankle Boot.

Stay tuned, because we also got to shoot a video featuring another amazing female musician, Nicole Atkins — coming soon!

So I love the overalls and the leopard bomber jacket with the stripes is genius, but that poncho with the belt is amazing! It’s changed my mind about ponchos; they can, in fact, have a shape!

Great post!
