UPDATE: This post originally ran on April 30th, but we can’t get enough of this delicious recipe as the weather warms up!
The color, the name, the taste…everything about blood oranges sits well with me. That deep red hue when you slice it open reminds me of a liquid sunset, and the citrus aroma that fills the air is so refreshing. Cinco De Mayo (another thing I love) is just around the corner, and the margaritas are sure to be flowing in celebration. This year for a colorful twist on the traditional beverage, I came up with a recipe for a blood orange margarita that is both delicious and beautiful. If your having a party, or just want a fun new drink recipe for the season, you have to try this out!
Blood Orange Margarita
(the below amounts yield a single serving)
1 1/2 ounces of tequila ( I used a silver tequila but feel free to use whatever kind you prefer!)
The juice of 2 blood oranges
1/2 ounce orange liquor
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
2 dashes of bitters
a dash of agave nectar
Soda water
Mint
Pink Himalayan salt
Red rock salt
Handful of ice
Find a mason jar (or whatever you prefer), and throw a handful of ice cubes in before adding the tequila. I used a shots worth, but you can add in more or less depending on how strong you would like it.
Next, add in the juice of two blood oranges. I can’t get over how pretty this fruit is. The juice is the perfect pinkish-red color.
Add in the rest of the ingredients, then fill the glass to the top with soda water. Now, I love me some salt on my margarita…on the rim, and even in the drink. I took a tiny dash of the pink Himalayan salt and added it straight into the drink. I also grinded up some of the red rock salt and used a bit of that too for the rim. Take a slice of blood orange for garnish and swipe it around the rim of your glass before placing on some salt with your fingertips.
Give it a good stir, garnish with some mint and voila!…a beautifully delicious blood orange margarita. You can also throw all of the ingredients into a blender if you like your margaritas frozen. Enjoy!

This looks amazing! I love salted drinks. Good thing I still have a big chunk of pink Himalayan salt from my last trip to India.
