DIY All-Natural Hand Sanitizer

The idea came to me in a dream last week.

In this dream of mine, I found myself pouring huge amounts of hand sanitizer onto my hands. Horrified at the amount of chemicals I was being exposed to, I thought, “There HAS to be a better way.” I woke up and said to myself, “Oh, there’s DEFINITELY a better way.” These are the types of bad dreams you have when you’re me. Ha!

Why I’ve never before thought to make a natural hand sanitizer is beyond me – we already know quite well that there are tons essential oils that have antibacterial, antifungal, and other antimicrobal properties. This should have been a no-brainer! And if you’re the natural-beauty-product experimenter that I think you may be, you probably already have all of the ingredients on hand.

Ingredients:

4 ounces aloe vera gel

10 drops tea tree oil

5 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops clove essential oil

5 drops lemon essential oil

½ teaspoon vitamin E oil

1 teaspoon witch hazel (optional)

The tea tree and essential oils included in this are some of the best at destroying harmful bacteria, fungi, and other germs. Witch hazel offers additional bacteria-fighting properties due to its alcohol content, but I left this optional in case you want to keep your mixture totally free of alcohol. Aloe vera also contains germ-killing properties and adds moisture to the skin. Vitamin E oil adds additional moisture and prolongs the shelf life of the product.

To make, mix all ingredients together in a small bowl, then transfer to a bottle for use and storage. A small spray bottle works perfectly for this – you can add a bit of filtered water if you want to make your mixture easier to spray. This is so convenient because you can just throw it in your purse and carry it with you wherever you go!

The thing I love most about this? Like most of the natural products I find myself making… it smells incredible.

Do you think this would work with aloe vera juice in place of the gel? Other than having a thinner consistency, it should work, right?

How long will this last. Does it “go bad” after a certain period of time?

Do not waste your money on this recipe, our Biotechnology class used it to test the effectiveness of Natural sanitizer compared to chemical and this one didn’t work at all. It was an oily mess and a waste of $50
