Styling 101: Layer Up

The tank, the thermal, the sweater, the jacket…all worn together, all necessary, and all practical when it comes to layering up for fall.I think that’s my favorite thing about this season. The fact that you can get away with wearing 5 things up top and look cool doing it is what makes styling outfits so fun this time of year. Adding in those multiple elements gives off a surprising effect. Cuffed thermals poking out of sweaters, and mesh shirts revealing strappy intimates underneath are just some of the things we are looking forward to playing around with once the weather starts to turn cooler. If you’re shy to layers, allow this post to give you the courage and inspiration you need to get layered up and ready for fall!

To start, pick base layers to build out from. In the above look, a mini skirt and a cami made up the first layer, then begins the stacking game.

Next… the thermal. I love the cuff detailing on some of the ones we have online right now which looks great peeking out of a sweater by rolling up the sleeves. Keeping to a minimal color palette is smart when layering. You don’t want to get too crazy by mixing a lot of colors when you already have a lot going on with the multiple layers. Black and white is always a safe bet.

jacket and beanie

A cozy sweater is perfect when it comes to layering. If you get too hot, you always have the option to remove this piece and keep it a little more basic with just the thermal.

Finish off with a slouchy boyfriend jacket, some thigh highs, and a beanie!

Ponchos are also a great layering piece, and I love how they give off a western vibe.

Generally speaking, I think people tend to wear more form fitting things on the bottom half when a poncho is worn. The drapey silhouette might scare away the idea of pairing it with a more relaxed pant on the bottom. But, if done in the right way, you can achieve a clean and cool look. I love starting with a slim fitting layer up top, like the Sweet Thing Top, and then throwing on a comfortable harem pant.

socks and heels

To keep the look girly, and to give you a bit of height, a heeled boot or clog is best to wear on your feet. (And of course, feel free to add in some socks.)

Being comfortable is always key for me whenever I’m styling my outfits, and I love how this over-sized look achieves that without drowning the wearer.

mesh and jeans

Wearing a lot of layers and feeling sexy is sometimes hard to accomplish, and that is why I love the Mesh Mock Neck Cami. Without being too revealing, wearing this over a strappy bra and pairing it back with some boyfriend jeans and sneakers gives you that cool girl look while being subtly sexy at the same time.

Throw on a big furry jacket to complete the look and give it that one last finishing layer.

I’m all sorts of stoked for the incoming fall season! Knee socks, riding boots, and my oversized sweater + leggings, please! Plus – Massachusetts in the fall is the most gorgeous place to be. Love the leaves changing.

Warm regards,
