5 Steps To Fortune

This post comes from our Australia contributor, Miann Scanlan. Follow along with her on Instagram @freepeopleaustralia!

Most of us chase wealth and fortune by working really hard, sacrificing our personal lives, relationships, and even our health in an all-out pursuit of accumulating dollar signs. We get so caught up in looking to money as the answer to all our problems that we don’t realize what we already have. The thing is, money is entirely unrelated to what we really and truly have, which is why wealth and fortune should be determined not by money, but instead by the quality of the life you lead.

Ahh, serendipity: the effect by which one accidentally stumbles upon (or happens to finally see) something truly wonderful, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated. It’s a beautiful thing.

The trick is to feel rich not when you look at your bank account, but when you look at your life. For a life of abundance in the truest of fortunes, adhere to these six riches you already have sitting in the bank of life.

good fortune

Connection

When you lose the ability to connect not only your mind, body, and spirit, but also to those spirits and souls around you, you can be the poorest man in the world. Strong connections give us a sense of belonging, they literally feed to the soul. These friendships, lovers, and family members are a part of building a life based on experiences, rather than on possessions. They add tremendous value to your life but cost nothing at all.

Freedom

To move forward and to seek happiness in life depends on our ability to think and our ability to choose. When we feel like we are stripped of our freedom, we feel trapped. But we always have the freedom of choice. Choosing to live where you want, to travel, and to do what you want to do in your life is a form of wealth. “Today I choose happiness”.

Time

Time to take the slow route, to watch the tide come in, to pick up that book where you left off a few years ago. Free time is time we spend with others, for maintaining our health, for self-improvement, for planning our next move, and for creating those experiences that make life worth living. Being rich in time isn’t only for those that are retired or on vacation, we all have the same twenty-four hours in a day, but the truly wealthy are those that spend their time wisely.

Nature

Without knowing it, everyone on this planet is rich in the gifts of nature that are abundant all around them, whether it’s found in an old oak tree of a city park, in the waves crashing onto the sand, or in the verdant meadows of a rural area. Head outside and see that money truly does grow on trees because with every sunrise and every sunset Mother Nature tops-up our piggy banks.

Health

They say that many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health. And I should know first hand. I’ve literally worked myself sick many times to the point where I’ve been wheeled around in a hospital bed thinking to myself “there has to be a better way”.  And there is. Change your perspective of wealth and you will literally change your life. Being rich in good health lays in the capacity to nourish and look after your body.

Thank you for this. I think good health makes a person the wealthiest they can be. Wealth is not defined by money, but life itself.

Thank you for sharing these thoughts. They are so true. I too, have first hand experience with working myself to a hospital visit. It was, thankfully, a big wake up call for me. I am now taking the time to do all those things you are talking about and everything definitely falls into place for a better life.
