Austin is known for being an incredibly active city, and it makes sense. It’s brimming with beautiful trails for running, biking, and hiking alongside riverbanks, under bridges, beneath canopies of oak trees, and up rocky inclines. The fall and winter months make for perfect running temperatures, and all of these things combine to entice you outside, to lace up your sneakers and go. After a run there is nothing I crave more than a fresh smoothie, and I love experimenting with different combinations and flavors. The one I’m sharing today is simple, delicious, and one of my absolute favorites.
One ingredient that all of my smoothies have in common is hemp protein powder, which I somehow am only just now discovering. I’m a vegetarian and I know protein is one of the things I don’t always get enough of, but — especially for anyone who exercises frequently — protein is essential. Hemp protein is a great option, not just for vegetarians and vegans, but for any athlete. It is easily digestible, so it doesn’t require as much of your body’s energy, and is high in amino acids and fiber. It is also said to have anti-fatigue properties, and improve both your kidney function and immune system.
The second I stumbled upon this combination of ingredients I was hooked. I like to use frozen peaches, making the smoothie cold and refreshing. The peaches act as a great natural sweetener when combined with kale and coconut water, and I love the kick of ginger.
Peach Ginger Kale Protein Smoothie
Makes 1 serving
Ingredients:
1 cup frozen peaches
1 cup kale
1 cup coconut water
1 tbsp chopped ginger
2 tbsp hemp protein powder
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until well-incorporated. Enjoy!

What’s your favorite protein powder?
I always like learning a new protein recipe like this one. Especially since it includes natural ingredients that are a must for me. I am a big fan of adding cinnamon or ginger to my protein shakes since they can taste somewhat bland at times.
